Since the first Eurovision Song Contest, back in 1956, the competition has provided an arena for the best (and sometimes worst) that pop music has to offer. In the world’s most famous song contest, nations across Europe – as well as a few outside countries – submit their best tracks to find the best of the bunch.

When the clocks struck midnight on 1 January 2020, we all felt optimistic about the year to come; it was the start of a new decade – a time of opportunity and promise. But things didn’t entirely go to plan. Instead, COVID-19 happened, and the world halted. We covered our faces, washed our hands for a bit longer and stayed inside. Live music became a thing of the past as concerts and festivals were delayed and artists had to rethink how to promote their albums without leaving their houses.

After seeing a BBC report on the crisis in 1984, singer Bob Geldof decided that he needed to use his fame to raise awareness and money to help those impacted by the famine.
