At 62, he left behind his wife and child in Mauritania, stepping into the unknown for stability and opportunity. Hever Castle: Castle of queens
Hever Castle has long been associated with Anne Boleyn, but fascinating new findings reveal how another of Henry VIII’s queens made her mark Words by Sandra Lawrence Back in those golden, pre-pandemic days, the team at Hever Castle, Kent, were gearing up for a grand 750th birthday. Just before baking the cake, however, they thought it might be a good idea to check a few facts. The guidebook had always said Hever was founded in 1270, but had anyone ever made certain of this?

Teachers in Transition: The Impact of Anti-Racist Professional Development on Classroom Practice
by Sandra M. Lawrence & Beverley Daniel Tatum - 1997 This article examines the impact of an antiracist professional development project on eighty-four suburban white teachers, all of whom are part of a voluntary desegregation program. Analysis of writing-sample data reveals that forty-eight of the eighty-four participants took antiracist actions as a result of their new learning about race and racism. In all, 142 specific actions were noted.

Stargazing In London: Top Tips From The Royal Observatory
Londonist Stargazing In London: Top Tips From The Royal Observatory A telescope at Greenwich, by Nick A in the Londonist Flickr pool. Suggest stargazing in London and most people will assume you’re planning a trip to Leicester Square on BAFTA night. When they realise you mean the heavenly variety, they’ll look at you in frank disbelief. London is one of the most heavily light-polluted cities in the world but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to see not just the odd star but entire constellations.
Journal of the Plague Year
Shame on me, that it takes a pandemic to get me writing this blog again. I’ll be honest – I stopped for a reason – basically I was seeing a load of ‘gardening blogs’ that didn’t do anything other than show off what their writers had been growing and I began to wonder if I had anything more than that to say. Courgettes just keep on coming if you harvest them regularly Apparently now, I do.

Grand Lost Gardens of England
Visions of a secret paradise only partially found Gardening is war. Wildlife, weather, weeds, pestilence, conflict and even fashion can obliterate entire horticultural chapters within months, leaving the book of British gardening history as patchy as a badly-mown lawn. We have nothing left of the beautiful gardens enjoyed by Roman Britons, for example, though at Fishbourne near Chichester, excavations have led to a unique reconstruction using original 1st-century bedding patterns.
Inside Staple Inn: 'That Tudor-Looking Building At Chancery Lane'
Everyone knows Staple Inn, even if they don’t know what’s it’s called. It’s this one: It used to be in the London Borough of Camden but one day, back in 1994, the building miraculously moved. Courtesy of arcane boundary changes, Staple Inn now lives back home in the City of London. One of just four original Tudor timber-framed buildings left in the City, Staple Inn shouldn’t have survived at all. Plague, fire, more fire and fire-bombs have all had a pop. But that Grade I-listed frontage stays.
Inside The Magnificent St Annes Church In Limehouse
Sandra Lawrence Inside The Magnificent St Annes Church In Limehouse Don't look up “The wooden ladder’s the awful one,” admits Darren Macleod. “It’s 45º and it bounces.” What he doesn’t add is that the ladder is at the very tippy-top of an already perilous climb up an increasingly tight spiral staircase. Oh, and it’s leaning out over London’s highest clock and a hole that plunges pretty much literally to God-knows-where.
Behind The Scenes Of The Fulham Palace Restoration
In July 2018, we took a tour of Fulham Palace with Community Archaeologist Alexis Haslam during a £3.8million restoration project. A Tudor Palace? In London? Still standing? Yep — Fulham Palace is still standing, and very much open to visitors. In medieval times, the status of the church was right up there with the status of the monarch. Bishops ruled in style and, like any other toff, needed their own London pad.
The Secret World War Two Bunker
Sandra Lawrence The Secret World War Two Bunker A brand-new housing estate — all fake-cobble driveways, spindly, just-planted shrubs and shiny front doors. It could be anywhere, save for a curious, battered, facing-the-wrong-way metal sign attached too high up a lamp post: Battle of Britain Bunker. Eh? The Battle of Britain had a bunker? In Uxbridge? Apparently so.
Around Town: Uncover the Fiction of London
In the spirit of this edition’s Literary Britain, I’m dedicating Around Town to specific places from novels set in the capital. From the very dawn of the printing press, London has been the venue for fiction. In 1387 Geoffrey Chaucer’s pilgrims set out on their journey to St. Thomas Becket’s shrine from the Tabard Inn in Southwark. Part of the old Roman Watling Street, the area around London Bridge, the only southern entrance to the City, was forested with travelers’ hostelries.
Literary London: Always Cherished
Writers have loved London for as long as London has existed. Their voices echo down the centuries, lending the city a means of expression and ourselves a lexicon for understanding it. When William Caxton set up his printing press in the almonry of Westminster Abbey in 1476, he became England’s first publisher. Works such as Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Aesop’s Fables have never gone out of print, and there is a plaque to his memory in the Abbey, close to Poets’ Corner.
This Bustling Metal Exchange Is Like Stepping Back Into The 80s
Sandra Lawrence This Bustling Metal Exchange Is Like Stepping Back Into The 80s That old rowdy, arm-waving, bid-shouting, braces-pinging image of stock trading — it all went south in the 80s, right? Well, the braces-pinging bit, maybe. You'll not see many City gents in Gordon Gekko mismatched collars and wide ties anymore. But trading did go electronic at the London Stock Exchange in 1986.
Around Town: London's Dramatic Victorian Architecture - British Heritage Travel
Rather than feature a single district this month, I thought I’d look at some of London’s most beautiful buildings, spanning a moment in time that changed Britain’s heritage forever: the reign of Queen Victoria. Sir John Soane was one of Britain’s most influential architects. He represented everything that was magnificent about Georgian architecture and introduced radical designs that made the most of available light—ideal for art galleries and grand assemblies in the days before electricity.
Behind The Scenes At The Royal Albert Hall: Part 2
Sandra Lawrence Behind The Scenes At The Royal Albert Hall: Part 2 Peering down through the grid in the ceiling. Yikes. One of the most memorable components of the famously elliptical Royal Albert Hall is the delicate-looking glass dome. Dainty? It's a bruiser. The ribs, glazing and ceiling weigh 800 tons and, just to add extra 'yerk', they're not in any way fixed to the rest of the building. They just sit on the walls, staying put by sheer weight. It’s not worth worrying about.
Behind The Scenes At The Royal Albert Hall: Part 1
When lazy statisticians say something is large enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall X times, which Royal Albert Hall do they mean? The plush, gilded auditorium with its five storeys, multiple entrances, labyrinthine staircases, four restaurants and 15 bars? Or do they include in their calculations the secret, alternative Royal Albert Hall under the Royal Albert Hall? Far below those curved, cream-painted corridors hides another universe, as deep as the hall itself is tall.
Around Town: Christmas in London - British Heritage Travel
Christmas has been celebrated in Merry England for more than a thousand years. Some customs melt back even further to pagan traditions. At a time of year when twilight falls mid-afternoon and frost hovers on the breath, the joy of nighttime sparkle, mulled wine, music and entertainment is as welcome to a modern, city-hardened Londoner as any rustic medieval reveler.
Around Town: Regent's Park - British Heritage Travel
London’s Royal Parks are all stunning, and all different. Hyde Park’s metropolitan grandeur contrasts beautifully with the regal pomp of St James’s; hilly history at Greenwich in the east balances the woods and grasslands of Bushey in the west. The ancient majesty of Richmond’s wild-roaming deer on a crisp autumnal morning is an experience to savor, while Kensington and Green Parks enjoy a cosmopolitan glamor all their own.
What Does Black Rod Do The Rest Of The Year?
He’s like Father Christmas, isn’t he? One day’s work in a fancy costume, then feet up for the rest of the year… "A lot of people think the whole job revolves around breeches, stockings and banging on the door," admits David Leakey, "but the ceremonial is a very small part of the job". Leakey is the 79th Black Rod since 1349, when Edward III realised he needed someone to keep his brand-new Knights of the Order of the Garter in check.
Things To Do In London Between 5pm And 7pm On A Weekday
So you've finished work and you've got plans for later. But there are still two hours to kill. It's too late for cafés, too early for supper and you don't belong to a private members' club. Sure, the pubs are open but the good ones are standing room only. In Paris, cinq à sept — five to seven o'clock in the evening — is a delicious opportunity.
Scandal Mapped: The London Of Emma, Lady Hamilton
Sandra Lawrence Scandal Mapped: The London Of Emma, Lady Hamilton Emma as a Bacchante by George Romney, 1785. Even in her day it was hard to tell Emma, Lady Hamilton, tittle from tattle. The Prince of Wales himself swore that he’d caught sight of her as a prostitute in Covent Garden — he, of course, was there merely for the purposes of research. Others remember her in all manner of seedy venues, some probable and others less so.
Looking Back with the Westby Area Historical Society
The Rev. Saugstad’s wife, Randine, died April 28, 1877. This left Rev. Saugstad with seven children to raise on his own while he tended to all the congregations under his care. We pick up his story in Holmes City, Douglas County, Minn., a year after Randine’s death. After his first wife’s death, Christian married Marie Gunhild Myhr on May 1, 1878, in Trysil. Marie, the daughter of Ole Myhr and Julia Engebrigtson, was born on May 18, 1858, in Stordolen, Norway.
Looking Back with the Westby Area Historical Society
Sitting above the eastern bank of Lake Mjosa, south of the Ringsaker church, lies the Saugstad farm. Documents date the farm at least as far back as 1396. By the time Tollef Olsen was born in 1792, the farm had been divided into East Saugstad and West Saugstad. Tollef’s parents, Ole Tollefsen and Marte Michelsdatter (Krogvig) were farming vestre (west) Saugstad.
Looking Back with the Westby Area Historical Society
For a historian or genealogist, walking among the tombstones in Coon Prairie Cemetery is a part of exploring the history of the area. For those of us with ancestors buried here, it is a place to return and remember them. The dates on some of these stones go back to the early pioneers.
Looking Back with the Westby Area Historical Society
What a sad day it was when I read my email telling me that Eric Leum had passed away. Although we had never met face to face, I considered him one of my genealogy friends. Eric had a similar passion for digging through old records to find the answers to our questions on our pioneer ancestor’s past. He was always willing to help. Eric became my “go to” guy when I had questions about Westby.
Inside London's Surreal House Of Dreams
"I don’t do beige and magnolia. Minimalism means you can't make your mind up. It's lazy." It’s a good job artist Stephen Wright is at least monochrome in his clothing today, or he might disappear completely into the rainbow explosion that is 45, Melbourne Grove, AKA The House of Dreams. Beige and magnolia could actually be in there somewhere but it's hard to tell beyond the profusion of shocking pink, gladiola-orange and bleach-bottle blue.
