By Sandy Eggleston of An 8-year-old will continue in the footsteps of her grandfather and great-great-grandfather when she plays the Last Post and reveille in Otautau on Saturday for Anzac Day. Maia Carran will play the bugle calls on an instrument belonging to her great-great-grandfather James Clapp, who served on the HMS Ajax in World War 1. Clapp immigrated to New Zealand after the war. He gave the bugle to Maia's grandfather David, who has played it at every Anzac Day for the past 60 years.

Workshops on autism planned

Help is on the way for people struggling to understand either themselves or someone they know who is autistic or has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Whangārei counsellor Dee Jones, who specialises in autism and ADHD, will be speaking at two workshops in Invercargill next month. Ms Jones said the way a person’s brain functioned could be described as neurotypical or neurodivergent.

Southland Festival of Dance

Rachel’s Studio of Dance hosted the Southland Festival of Dance on Saturday. About 100 dancers from throughout New Zealand took part in the event including West Gore, East Gore and St Mary’s school pupils. The festival is one of the country’s leading ballroom, Latin American and New Vogue dancing competitions. Studio owner Rachel Wilson said it was the 17th year she had organised the event. “It just seems to get bigger each year.
