Down the Garden Path: Seed starting
Have you ever noticed how small or brown or dry seeds can be? They may look dead, yet given some soil, some warmth, some water, a bit of light and they sprout green life. Growing plants from seed can be magical and it’s easy. All you need is the seeds, sterile potting medium, containers, some water and light. A “sunny windowsill” is not sufficient since there is not enough light there for your seedlings to grow. Growing plants from seed is economical, too.
Down the Garden Path: November in the garden
Early November brought confusingly warm days while snow sat leftover in shady places from Halloween, just a day or so before. Sunlight, golden through the stained-glass yellow leaves of maples, is still warm on my face. It’s a season of changes; changing weather, but also changes in the ways we garden, as horticultural sciences are always learning new things, about which we are wise to learn, too.
Down the Garden Path: Getting your garden (and you) through summer’s end
It’s hot. It’s humid. We’ve been gardening since April. (Remember daffodils?) Now it’s August. Four months. We’re tired. We took the liberty of taking a brief vacation, and now the weeds are taller than we are. What to do? Throw in the trowel? Nope. Tomorrow, in the cool early morning. Go out, for just an hour. Set a timer. Deadhead that rose. Clear the path with supports for a flopping perennial. Clean the birdbath and splash in fresh water. An hour. Stop. Go inside. Same drill, the next day.
Albion wants tower in Evanston, too
Curbed Chicago and Evanston Now both report that Albion Residential is proposing a 16-story residential development in Evanston. Sound familiar? Evanston – it's the bizarro-world version of Oak Park. Similar in population – spoiler alert: Evanston's a little bigger – and in demographics – both municipalities being made up of the affluent kind – the tongue-in-cheek rivalry is occasionally mentioned at Oak Park Board of Trustees meetings.

The last night at Home
Why the abode we dwell in is not just called a "house." We need an extra word. That word is "home." | Provided This is our last night at 400 Home. Or, as it has been known more formally to a long line of Blue Cab drivers, lost delivery persons, and first-time guests: 400 Home, the Corner of Home and Washington. From room to room, snaking through doorways into hallways, up and down stairs, on tables and floors, brown moving boxes are sealed and labeled and stacked. They line up in all sizes.
