The additional disclosure is required by the state’s new pay transparency act, which Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law on Nov. 18, 2024, adding New Jersey to the growing list of state and local governments advancing similar legislation aimed at advancing the goal of pay equity.

Helping the Early Care and Education Workforce Thrive
Helping the Early Care and Education Workforce Thrive The demand for affordable, high-quality child care continues to outpace availability. In 2019, more than three-quarters of U.S. families who needed early care and education (ECE) services struggled to find care for their children. Both publicly and privately funded ECE services have been shown to benefit young children’s cognitive and social-emotional development.

Entertainment 0 Views Documentaries like Netflix’s Harry & Meghan are “almost in a different category,” the docs boss of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment said today. Responding to a question from Deadline at MIA Market, former HBO producer Sara Bernstein also said the “fees have raised in terms of what this access looks like and what it costs a producer like our company” on shows where the subjects exert a certain amount of editorial control.

Peer Review Resources for Authors and Reviewers
Peer review is the cornerstone of academic writing and publishing. That means most scholars will inevitably experience being on both the giving and receiving end of reviewer comments. Despite this commonality, many aspects of the process can be confusing and misunderstood. We’ve gathered some of our favorite peer review resources to shed some light on this scholarly practice and how we can make it better.
’Tis the Season: What 80s Mall Movies Tell Us About an Enduring Site of American Tension
Three teenage girls, all teased hair and lip gloss, glide up the escalator in their denim miniskirts. A trio of pop-collared boys are going down. In unison, the boys’ heads follow the girls. Cuts between shots are fast. Every frame is filled with bright colors and upbeat music. Obviously, I’m watching a 1980s mall movie.
What We Wear: A Reading List on Fashion and Our Complex Relationship to Clothes
By Sara Tatyana Bernstein Something odd happened to my clothes during the pandemic. Without meaning to, I amassed a wardrobe with a palette ranging from cremini mushroom to a particular purplish-gray — an unfortunate shade that reminds me of used chewing gum. This summer I splurged on a tangerine house dress, but it never left my closet. Cheery colors don’t feel right.
What the 1980s Prairie Revival Can Tell Us About Cottagecore
A tiered calico skirt, an ivory blouse with a lace collar, hair tied back with a wilted ribbon, maybe a basket of lavender and a hand raised to shield eyes from misty sun. I’m describing an image tagged cottagecore. But I could also be describing one of the most popular looks of the early to mid 1980s: prairie style.

8 Thinkers Who Influenced (How We Understand) Black History
We began this piece thinking that we’d do a focus on Black thinkers who have influenced our own understandings of power and culture. But as we started writing, we realized that a major emphasis in celebrating Black history, particularly in education and media, is on historical figures: those leaders, scholars, and change-makers who are heroes to many of us (think MLK or W.E.B. Dubois — or as one of us recently heard on NPR, a feature on Ida B. Wells).
How Pretty in Pink turned a vintage Hollywood genre into something totally '80s
Teen films emerged in the late 1940s, and by the 1950s constituted a full-fledged genre and niche market. Most critics agree that the genre’s “golden age” was the 1980s, and John Hughes was its king. As a writer and director, his teen films “redefined” the genre (Roger Ebert) and have become memorialized as “symbolic” of the era (Oscar tribute). Hughes, the story goes, took the anxieties and emotions of (most often white, middle-class, suburban) teenage life seriously.
An Ode to Poorly Lit Dressing Rooms | Sara Bernstein
When I was seven years old, my aunt Mary took my older sister and me shopping. At that age, I already had a love-hate relationship with clothes. I knew the bitterness of not being able to afford or fit into the best styles. But I also knew the joy of finding the place where body, style, and price converged, and the exhaustion of searching for it. That day, Mary was determined to help me find some jeans.
Conservatives Have Always Been Part of the Gen X Story. We Just Forgot.
I always notice when my generation is in the news, because we hardly ever are. So, last month I couldn’t help seeing that Gen X Twitter was abuzz over some polls showing that my little cohort — or at least its older half — are among the last blocs with a majority of devoted Trumpers. The findings are still eliciting dismay and surprise among the middle-aged in my social media feeds.

How Fashion Studies is Centering BIPOC & How We Can Do Better
In this episode of Fashion Cats & Cocktails, Sara and Elise dig into a question they have long discussed between themselves when pondering the direction of Dismantle Magazine: What can they do to help disrupt the persistent whiteness of fashion studies? Listen to their experiences as fashion scholars and creators of a cultural studies magazine that primarily publishes content about fashion.
What will the 2000s fashion revival really look like?
In 2000, I attended a formal event (my first as a fledgling grown-up) wearing a black halter top, fuzzy pink cardigan, and a long skirt that looked like it was woven from iridescent steel — my own peak Y2K. That year George W.
Why Your Grandma’s Housecoat is the Perfect Work-From-Home Outfit | Sara Bernstein
I’m hunting for the perfect work outfit. It needs to be loose, natural fiber, and long enough that my thighs wouldn’t stick to my desk chair. It cannot be white. Sleeves are preferred. Pockets, required. I tend toward neutral colors, but would consider a fun print—something ’70s-inspired with a lot of orange and green, maybe. As a freelance writer and adjunct professor, I mostly work from home.
Official Secrets
By Lorry Kikta | September 1, 2019 So, I’m sure that a lot of people would agree with me when I say that the War in Iraq should have never, ever begun in the first place. It was an attempt by Dubya to finish the business that Daddy started all those years ago, and thusly, win his approval. Or so goes the storyline in my opinion. Of course, there was more to it than that, there always is, and that’s the territory Gavin Hood’s Official Secrets delves into.

'I Love You, Now Die': TV Review
TV 11:18 AM PDT 7/9/2019 by Robyn Bahr HBO's captivating two-part documentary dissects the death of Conrad Roy, a teenager who ended his own life following his girlfriend's encouragements. In July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy climbed into his truck stationed in a Kmart parking lot and intentionally inhaled carbon monoxide, poisoning himself and ending his life.
THE SEAMSTRESS by Sara Tuvel Bernstein Louise Loots Thornton Marlene Bernstein Samuels Read by Wanda McCaddon
In this gripping memoir, narrator Wanda McCaddon recounts how Holocaust survivor Sara Tuvel Bernstein was transformed from a precocious girl to a feisty woman who fought against the Nazis. As a young Romanian student, Bernstein was expelled from school because she refused to tolerate a teacher’s anti-Semitism. That act of defiance led to a job as a dressmaker and her eventual capture and assignment to a concentration camp.
Farewell to Payless and its terrible, no good, very cheap, occasionally meaningful shoes
Apparently I’m not the only one who stopped shopping at Payless ShoeSource a long time ago. According to various media reports, people who need to buy cheap shoes are getting them online or from the abundant options fast fashion now provides, which is why the company will close all of its U.S. and Canada stores by the end of May (some international locations will remain open). Saying goodbye to Payless is like bidding farewell to the whole post-WWII American shopping experience.

Watch A 6-Year-Old Interrogate A Future Dad About His Parenting Skills
They say that kids are the best judges of character, and 6-year-old Andrew is no exception. In this episode of Kidding Around: Fatherhood, a short-form series inspired by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment's Being Dad, 6-year-old Andrew interviews a potential father of the same name about his qualifications for fatherhood. "I think it's part of living. You know, you gotta grow up, and I always loved my dad, I thought he was a great guy," says Andrew after being asked why he wants to be a dad.
Why Gen X Isn’t Psyched for the ’90s Revival
When the 1960s ended, my mom put them in a box. Twenty years later, pop culture was saturated with Summer of Love retrospectives, neo-hippie jam bands, mod-influenced Britpop, and The Wonder Years. I was 15, and the ’60s were back. My family didn’t have money for new clothes, but I had the box in the back of my parents’ closet full of fringed suede jackets, houndstooth rompers, and psychedelic mini dresses. My mother thought it was adorable.

Striking Garment Workers Use Fashion to Show They're Consumers Too
“Clara Lemlich, a little Russian girl of sixteen, with a pompadour behind just like that of any other girl of sixteen, was the one who pressed the button.” So begins Sarah Comstock’s account of the “Uprising of the 20,000,” the New York City general garment workers’ strike that lasted from November 1909 to February 1910. Never mind that Lemlich was actually 23 and an experienced organizer: What interests me is Comstock’s fascination with that pompadour.
12 Mother/Daughter Stories to Watch After Lady Bird
Step one: Go see Lady Bird. Just do it. You won’t regret it. You might wonder why you haven’t seen more movies like this. And the early 2000s setting combined with its compassionate view of humanity might feel like science fiction after spending 2017 binging documentaries like Handmaid’s Tale. But you won’t regret it.

May Day Edition: Commodified Protest Signs and Floating Signifiers
Protest signs are hot right now. (Makes sense. There’s a lot to protest.) They’re so hot that some people are even protesting protest signs. Like a lot of you, I was disgusted by that Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad and its images of “diverse” yet uniformly beautiful youths, smiling and waving signs with the vague and aggressively polite “Join the Conversation” slogan. But nothing I’ve read about the debacle quite captured my own feelings on the subject. And other signs have annoyed me too.
Scientology doc 'Going Clear' shocks Sundance filmgoers
PARK CITY, Utah — Secrecy shrouded the controversial documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, which premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. Rumors swirled about massive protests, prompting filmgoers to arrive hours in advance to assure they got a seat. Security was heightened, but no threats materialized. The festival's most hotly anticipated documentary did not disappoint, however.
