Elizabeth Le Coq Currier and her husband, Joe Currier, had vacationed in Colorado for about 20 years when they finally decided to build a house of their own. The couple, who were living in the San Francisco Bay Area, discovered two rundown coal-miner’s sheds dating back to the early 1900s. Located in Crested Butte, about 20 miles south of Aspen, the structures had rusted corrugated-metal roofs and bullet-riddled, wooden walls that let daylight through.
