Sarah now serves as an English teacher in Texas. This comes after student teaching grades 9-12 in a 6A Texas high school journalism program in Fall 2021. At the end of this first year, she was awarded “Rookie of the Year” from her campus.

She completed a Master of Education from the University of North Texas in 2022 — a pivot from her background of dedicated work in journalism. Her passion is honest and impactful storytelling and sharing this skill with future generations.

Community garden built by urban forester, local children, plans for August opening

Driving through the looped parking lot behind 620 Farley St., you’ll find rows of tilled soil waiting for crops, beds of sprouting flowers competing to be noticed and tomatoes impatient to be picked. This is the community garden project flourishing behind Waxahachie’s Salvation Army and Boys and Girls Club. The volunteer behind the gardening operation, Jacob Calvit, walked through the garden last week picking strawberries and tomatoes, and talking about the work put in over the course of a year.

A celebration of history and service through doughnuts

What’s one topic that gets everyone excited? Doughnuts. That’s according to Kelly Garcia, volunteer with the Salvation Army and Boys and Girls Club in Waxahachie. The Salvation Army celebrated National Donut Day on June 3 – a tradition dating back to 1917. “You mention doughnuts, you’re going to get everybody’s attention,” Garcia said.

Local artists win awards following 15th annual plein air event

Kent Brewer stood next to his Best of Show painting on Saturday and talked about the benefits of Paint Historic Waxahachie, an annual painting event preserving local history through art. “I think it ties all the historic elements of the city with the art side of things and they’re the perfect blend,” the Waxahachie resident said.
