‘Black-out’ tags’ popularity puts fund for fallen first-responders in the black

Over the last two years, more and more “black-out” license plate tags have been popping up throughout the state of Mississippi. The trend ramped up after the passage of Senate Bill 2841 in 2023, which allowed for the generic use of the tag without any additional custom letters or words. Prior to that, the blackout option was only accessible to “vanity” tags, those with customized slogans. Since July of 2022, the state has sold more than 143,000 black-out car tags to residents of the state.

Expansion dead and Medicaid tech bill incomplete as the 2024 session wraps

In the last days of the 2024 Legislative session, both the Medicaid expansion and Medicaid tech bills were killed, but a budget was adopted for the Division. The efforts for Medicaid expansion during the 2024 Legislative session came to an end last night after the death of the conference report on a filing deadline. Lawmakers in the House and Senate could not come to an agreement on how to expand Medicaid in Mississippi, with much of the negotiations hanging on a work requirement waiver.

Success of "Black Out Tags" contributes to increased benefit for families of fallen first responders

Lawmakers pass increase to the death benefit for the families of fallen first responders from $100,000 to $250,000, with considerations for immediate funeral expenses. Over the last two years more and more “black out” license plate tags have been popping up across roadways throughout the state of Mississippi. The trend ramped up after the passage of Senate Bill 2841 in 2023, which allowed for the generic use of the tag without any additional custom letters or words.
