In February, journalist Ginella Massa stood by a cluster of candles illuminating a banner while, one after another, the names of the journalists killed since the start of Israel’s bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip were read out. She was one of four organizers of a vigil on the campus of Toronto Metropolitan University that aimed to shine a light on mainstream Canadian media’s failure to hold Israel accountable.

H aving lived in Qatar and Canada puts me in a unique spot, witnessing the West's holier-than-thou attitude while trying to maintain some sanity. While I am not a Qatari national, I was born there to Iraqi-Lebanese parents and many of my family members still live in Qatar. I migrated to Canada in 2010, the same year that Qatar won the bid for the World Cup. Since then, the western contempt toward Qatar, the country that I still lovingly call bayti (my home) has skyrocketed.

Last June, as I decorated the hallway of my home with yellow and blue balloons for my master’s graduation, my uncle called to say that my father had passed away. He was visiting extended family in Qatar and mentioned having the stomach flu earlier that day, which worried my mother and me, but we had no idea that would be our final conversation with him. In the same call that my uncle delivered the tragic news, he asked me to prepare the house for extended family to come and stay for a week.
