When my grandmothers lived, their homes were only a few long blocks from one another in Houston, but they felt worlds away in how they arranged them. I understood their homes to be the place of creativity that reflected all that mattered to them in the world. Which is to say, the very people they nourished there. A special domain that reflected evidence of life, even if the world beyond its threshold refused their gaze.

In a photo I keep of her on my desk, she sits on a bed, her golden-brown skin shimmering with red undertones, as if she had swallowed the sun whole. She is in her twenties, about ten years younger than I am now. Her brown eyes are black and deep. Wearing shorts and a summer blouse, her body appears relaxed, her legs are crossed, and she leans back, arms spread out like wings.
