What was your first job as a journalist?
The Arts Fuse! I wrote reviews of shows and music albums. It was really fun to be immersed in the world of arts and be paid to do it!
Have you ever used a typewriter?
No, but I would like to!
How is social media changing news?
It sensationalizes certain bits of news, but it also gets people news faster and with different takes on it depending on where it's found.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Megan Carter from Absence of Malice!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Never giving up on truth, being immersed in an environment, having a thirst for justice and fairness, tenacity, and writing under pressure.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Mostly cameras, digital sound recorders, and good old-fashioned Word. I'm not very tech-forward, but I think the basics are necessary.
Who do you wish followed you?
Sacha Pfeiffer, Walter Robinson, Kay Lazar, Mitchell Zuckoff, Kara Baskin, Jenee Osterheldt, Malcolm Gay...most of the Boston Globe staff.
Why did you become a journalist?
I'd always been a writer, but I knew I wasn't going to make it in fiction. When I saw the movie Spotlight, something just kind of clicked.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote for my school newspapers in both college and grad school. I wrote a wide array of topics, from Take Back the Night to the YAGP!
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Either a piece about child welfare with a focus on DCF after Harmony Montgomery's death or the double-sided scope of Question 2 to voters.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
"Think outside the box" sounds cliche, but you never know when it will be applicable in a necessary situation!
When's the best time to pitch you?
9-11 am.
What's your favorite drink?
Probably mint tea.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Boston Globe will always have a special place in my heart, but recently I've been really liking the New York Times.
