Waterford — Police confirmed Tuesday that Sen. Andrew Maynard was driving the wrong way Thursday when he struck a car that was traveling north on Route 32. Lt. Dave Burton said the accident was, at first, reported as a car into a ditch with air bag deployment. He said police then discovered another car north of the accident scene that was struck during the crash. Burton said police have yet to interview Maynard who was released from the hospital Monday.

Waterford — Before crashing his vehicle on Route 32 north Thursday, state Sen. Andrew Maynard, D-Stonington, was swerving between lanes and struck another vehicle, according to a man who said his wife's car was struck by the senator's vehicle. Pietro Scelfo said his wife, Laury Benjamin-Scelfo, had just visited her mother in New London and was on her way home to Uncasville on Route 32.

Montville — A spark that caused gasoline fumes to ignite most likely caused a Wednesday evening fire that destroyed Heiner's Auto Body & Sales on Route 32, a fire official said Thursday. Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said that Paul Leibig, whose family owns the body shop, was transferring gasoline from a vehicle with an electric pump into a gas can. The electric pump was plugged into an outlet from a drop light. He was attempting to replace a fuel pump.
