What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job as a journalist was writing an article about VRML for Web Developer print magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Absolutely, although at the time I could not figure out how it was ever going to help me in life.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is not just covering the news, it is influencing it. Journalistic integrity must always be a key part of reporting.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
My favorite fictional journalist would have to be Murphy Brown.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means that I have the honor of covering the topics that people are interested in with integrity, honestly, and sincerity.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
The silliest hashtag I've seen lately is #likeforlikes.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email, with some quotes and insights about the topic, which gives me a hint of the source's knowledge on the topic.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Google Docs, Notepad +, Chrome, along with Qwoted, Profnet, LinkedIn, MuckRack, Ask the Public, and of course, Google.
What's your favorite social network?
Professionally, LinkedIn is my favorite network, as it allows me to network with my peers. Personally, Reddit is my favorite.
Who do you wish followed you?
That's a tough question, but it'd be nice if Jeff Bezos followed me.
Why did you become a journalist?
Journalism is a way I can contribute to the world, and help business leaders to improve the lives of employees and customers.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I didn't work for my high school newspaper, but not long after, I wrote, edited, and published my own zine.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I am most proud of "Should Companies Speak Out on Social and Political Issues?" as well as "The Tech Industry’s Unconscious Bias Problem."
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Find some topics that are close to your heart, research them by reading everything you can find on the topic, then write, write, write.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Early morning, so I have time through the day to respond.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"I've been reading your articles for a couple of years now, and I'm thrilled to be able to speak about a subject that's near and dear to me."
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
"I don't really know much about the topic of your article, but my business is going to change the way you look at your portfolio."
What's your favorite drink?
Amazing, delicious coffee!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Practicing magic tricks, or doing some sort of arts and crafts project.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy reading Wired, CNN, BBC News, Scientific American, DJ Magazine, and Fast Company
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That technical writing is just about writing documentation, tutorials, or topics about computers.
