Final Fantasy VII Revelation Hands-On Preview: Hold Me Closer, Sephiroth
Two weeks ago, my colleague Matt Wardell got to check out Final Fantasy VII Revelation at the Tokyo Game Show. Now, at NY Comic Con, I also got a chance to sit down and play the same demo Matt did. I also had the chance to check out the new Romancing SaGa 3: Destines United preview, which you should also take a look at. My thoughts and impressions of this demo do mirror Matt’s, so please feel free to read his preview piece along with his other TGS previews from two weeks ago.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United Hands-On Preview
Sometimes I think there are about ten SaGa fans in the Western world, and I happen to be one of them. So when Square Enix invited us to try out not only Final Fantasy VII Revelation but also Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, I was a little more excited to try out Romancing SaGa 3 than Final Fantasy VII, even though I have loved the FFVII Remake Trilogy so far. And if you are interested in my thoughts on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, you can check out that article soon.
It’s Over, Star Wars Games. Zero Company Has The High Ground! Star Wars Zero Company Preview
When it comes to the Star Wars franchise, there exists a weird split, as many franchises have. For every good movie, there seem to be two or three bad ones; for every great show, two or three stinkers show up. The Star Wars games are no exception to this rule. In fact, they probably follow this rule to a T, as there are many more bad games in this franchise than there are good ones.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi Q&A
We recently had the privilege to do interviews with both Naoki Hamaguchi, the Director of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Teruki Endo, the Battle Director for both titles. When you’re done with this article, don’t forget to also check out our Teruki Endo interview. RPGFan: I only got to play a small portion of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the Switch 2, but it looked great in handheld mode.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Battle Director Teruki Endo Interview
We recently had the privilege to do two different interviews: an in-person interview with Teruki Endo, the battle director of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and a Q&A with Naoki Hamaguchi, the Director on those projects. Be sure to read our companion Q&A article with Naoki Hamaguchi, too.
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Hands-On Preview! Zelda? Secret of Mana? Or Something More?
HD-2D style games since the original Octopath Traveler have changed how we view retro-style titles from bigger publishers such as Square Enix. HD-2D not only looks great, but also scratches the old school sprite JRPG itch many of us have had since the end of the SNES and PS1 era. And since its debut, it appears in an assortment of different games and remakes, the most recent being the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes.
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Producer Naofumi Matsushita Q&A
As part of our The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales preview, I also had the opportunity to send in some questions to producer Naofumi Matsushita. As always, I would like to thank him for his time in answering our questions, as well as the Square Enix staff who translated the Q&A. RPGFan: When talking about top-down action RPGs, The Legend of Zelda definitely comes to mind at the top of the discussion.
Access Is the New Growth Strategy for Health Systems
As today’s health systems pursue strategic, aligned growth, they’re constrained by significant barriers. According to our Mindsets 2026 Healthcare Executive Leadership Report, some of the most prominent constraints include access to capital and access to staffing. For decades, health system growth followed a familiar path: add beds, build towers, expand square footage.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Switch 2 Preview and Demo Out Today!
Recently, I had the opportunity to check out Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the Switch 2. You can as well with the demo releasing today for both the Switch 2 and the Xbox Series X|S. The demo covers chapters 1 and 2, and save data carries over to the main game when it releases on June 3rd. As someone who waited for the PC version of the game to come out before experiencing it, it’s nice to finally see this game available on all platforms for people to enjoy.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Producer Takeshi Ichikawa Interview
As part of the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Preview, I had the opportunity to interview the game’s producer, Takeshi Ichikawa. As always, I would like to thank him for his time in answering our questions, as well as our translator and the Square Enix team for making the event and interview possible. RPGFan: Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has a unique look compared to its other contemporaries that have recently been redone, like Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D this year and Dragon Quest III HD-2D last year.

Crusaders of Chaotic Kindness Extra Life 2025 Weekend Charity Marathon 10/30-11/2
If we have learned anything from RPGs, it’s that the kindness of strangers goes a long way to saving the world. And I can’t stress enough that this ideology also applies to real life as well. Extra Life has helped children’s hospitals all over the world since its inception in 2008, and this year RPGFan is partnering with our friend BakusanOG’s team the Crusaders of Chaotic Kindness to raise money for this exact reason.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Director Kazutoyo Maehiro Interview
Thanks to the lovely people at Square Enix, I had the opportunity to play a small portion of the upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and, more importantly, sit down and do an interview with the game’s director, Kazutoyo Maehiro. As a huge fan of the series, I want to thank Maehiro for not only taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with me, but also for answering all my questions. And also thanks to the Square Enix staff who translated and helped with the interview.

As part of the Atlus event where we got to play a large portion of Metaphor: ReFantazio (don’t miss my preview of the first four hours with the game!), we also got to participate in a question-and-answer session with a few of the developers. Producer Junichi Yoshizawa, Lead Scenario Planner Yuichiro Tanaka, Lead Daily Systems Planner Azusa Kido, and Lead Battle Planner Kenichi Goto joined us from Studio Zero.

Unicorn Overlord Hands-On Preview
Since the release of Odin Sphere on the PS2, I always look forward to the next Vanillaware game. Their unique art style and great gameplay that mixes the old with the new always results in an enjoyable experience. Moving forward to 2019, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was quickly one of my favorite games of the year. When Atlus announced Unicorn Overlord in September, I was even more interested as I thought the tactical combat sections of 13 Sentinels were fantastic but few and far between.
Persona 3 Reload Hands-On Preview
Thanks to the lovely people over at Atlus and Sega, I was given the chance to do another hands-on impression of Persona 3 Reload at a recent event. A few months ago, I had the privilege of playing the game’s first demo and wrote about my initial thoughts on the game. This time, however, I got to play an actual real portion of the game and not just a demo.
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
On a tiny PlayStation demo disc back in the ’90s, a very different type of demo captivated me and never let go. The demo had no gameplay for the game, just an animated segment that lives inside my head to this very day.
Retro Encounter 396 - Lunar: The Silver Star Revisited
Article / Highlight · Podcast · Retro Encounter by , , and on December 21, 2023 I’m a sucker for a good podcast! 25 years ago, RPGFan started life as LunarNET, and five years before that, Lunar: The Silver Star released in the West. So, in honor of that, we got four of our resident Lunar fans together to chat about the various versions of Lunar: The Silver Star. Are we fans of the Working Designs localization? How does the combat hold up?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi Interview
As part of a recent Square Enix event where I played a demo of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (don’t miss my hands-on impressions), I also had the honor to conduct an interview with Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi. For those unfamiliar with Hamaguchi’s work, he contributed to several Final Fantasy titles, including Final Fantasy XII and Mobius Final Fantasy. Recently, he was the co-director for Final Fantasy VII Remake, but now he is the sole director for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Hands-On Impressions
Thanks to the people over at Square Enix, I was given a fantastic opportunity recently to play a demo of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and conduct a fantastic interview with Director Naoki Hamaguchi. You can check out the interview here to learn about a whole bunch of new gameplay information about Rebirth that you won’t find anywhere else, and hear Hamaguchi’s thoughts on various parts of the game.
