City outlines next steps for American Rescue Plan Act funding requests

Fifty-eight organizations submitted requests to the city of Columbia for shares of more than $25 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding. A total of 91 requests totaling $92.9 million were submitted and have been reviewed by an internal committee, according to a report that will be presented to the Columbia City Council on Monday. The committee scored 46 of the requests, totaling $31.8 million, at or above average, and those applications will be eligible to move forward.

Voters pick Knoth, Waterman for Columbia City Council seats

Don Waterman, a U.S. Navy veteran who said he wanted to bring a more conservative voice to Columbia governance, won the Fifth Ward seat on the City Council on Tuesday. Waterman defeated Gregg Bush, a registered nurse who campaigned on public safety, workforce development and affordable housing issues. Waterman received 1,908 votes, or 50.8%, to Bush's 1,850, or 49.2%. Waterman will replace Matt Pitzer, who chose not to seek a third term. Pitzer had endorsed Waterman in the race.

Columbia, Boone County marijuana taxes pass

Voters in Columbia and across Boone County approved two 3% taxes on the sale of recreational marijuana in Tuesday’s election. Both the city and county measures passed despite confusion across the state about whether marijuana taxes are stackable in local government jurisdictions that overlap. In Columbia, voters approved the tax by a vote of 12,165, or 67.9%, in favor to 5,757, or 32.1% against. The county proposition passed with 17,990 yes votes, or 68.1%, 8,439 no votes, or 31.9%.
