Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Freelance contributor.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Definitely! When I was in the army.

How is social media changing news?

The tables are turned - the public has control now.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

The media landscape has shrunk and changed drastically. These days, journalists have to be analysts and commentators, and not just reporters.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

An idea or product explained succinctly and honestly.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Hybrid cameras for stills and video, general office productivity apps for writing (even plain text editors).

What's your favorite social network?

None.

Who do you wish followed you?

Not so arrogant to wish some giant of a person would follow me.

Why did you become a journalist?

To provide commentary and analyses to technology and business from a first-person perspective.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A quick interview during an enterprise technology expo with Mac legend Steve Wozniak in Singapore.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Dig deeper.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime through email.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

It was eons ago, when Intel invited and flew us, a bunch of journalists, to Australia for a site visit and leadership interviews.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Pitch products for "review" which I cannot have in my own time and space to try out, such as B2B "solutions."

What's your favorite drink?

It is a toss up between an Americano or S.Pellegrino sparkling water.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Either painting my art, or in a flight deck.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Many PR practitioners may not realize my background as a biochemist and techie (sysadmin, cybersecurity researcher, and DevOps practitioner).
