Seth Putnam is the editorial director and co-founder of The Collective Quarterly, a new print magazine about travel and design. A graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism, he also writes for Chicago magazine, Time Inc., Michigan Avenue magazine, the Sun-Times. In a past life, he covered politics for the Kansas City Star and was a general assignment reporter at a small daily newspaper in rural Mississippi.

What was your first job as a journalist?

A newspaper in Mississippi. "Nice to meet you, kid," my editor said. "There's been a body found down a Ruben's Fish Shack. Go check it out."

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Frequently. My favorite is a Smith-Corona I fixed up in Mississippi.

How is social media changing news?

It's delivering it, not producing it.
