What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job in journalism was on the sports desk of The Recorder in Greenfield, Mass.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, but it's been a couple decades.
How is social media changing news?
News must now be bite-sized, targeted and shared instantly and regularly. Stories must be written in post-able stages.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Does Peter Parker count? I know he was mostly a freelance photojournalist, not a staffer like Clark Kent.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Individually, and with the news hooks clear and specific to my beat.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, I guess. Facebook's saturation level is greater, but I like gauging trends more quickly and efficiently.
Why did you become a journalist?
I have a curious mind and I love to write, so journalism seemed like a natural career for me. I want the how and why, not just the what.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was my high school's local editor for the regional Academic Advocate, a weekly supplement of student journalism in the Lewiston Sun Journal
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write stories you're passionate about, and work to write cleanly. Be ready to be flexible with your schedule and your finances.
