1 Introduction Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a multifunctional hormone synthesized primarily in the L cells of the ileum, colon, and rectum, as well as in specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS) (Müller et al. 2019). Released in response to food intake, GLP-1 activates GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1Rs), leading to decreased glucagon secretion, increased insulin secretion, appetite suppression, delayed gastric emptying, and regulation of glucose homeostasis (Meier and Nauck 2005).
