Ubiquitination of glycogen and metabolites in cells and tissues
Abstract Ubiquitin signalling covers a wide range of protein modifications, but its scope may still be underestimated, owing to the ubiquitination of non-proteinaceous substrates, such as sugars, lipids and nucleotides1. The breadth of ubiquitinated non-protein substrates, their abundance and their cellular roles are currently unclear, as current ubiquitinomic and proteomic techniques do not detect non-proteinaceous modifications.
Over the Moon renders the present with an eye toward the timeless
Audiences are hard to please. Give us too much of modern life in a work of art, and we find it shallow. Give us too little, and we are prone to call it stuffy and academic. There is a sweet spot between realist exposé and classically restrained theater. This is the case with Over the Moon, a new play written and directed by Matthew Gasda.

Chapter 13: All That Road Going (Part Two)
How dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use! As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains: but every hour is saved From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things; and vile it were For some three suns to store and hoard myself, And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.
The Day After the Rabblement
When in the course of human events, it becomes evident that men can no longer be considered equal; that, because of the dissolving of a mysterious quality of grace, a species of one-time gentlemen trifurcates into a tier of tyrants, a tier of those clinging to what’s left of the middle class, and a lowly band of rabble, we find ourselves asking, out of a need to stop these people from bothering us, where they all came from. Who are the rabble? Are the rabble simply the poor?
Chapter 12: Bayou Interlude
Ricocheting out of New Orleans came a car five strong, speeding under weeping willows drooping out from marshes and chrome-colored rivers. Seated in the middle of the back, Maurice untangled clumps of tobacco and rolled them into fine tips like an old Plains Indian. Laurianne became documentarian and narrated the history of the destination, Lafayette, an old encampment teetering on the banks of a bayou deep in the jungle, west of the Mississippi River.
Why AI Cannot Replace Artists
“i think this is gonna be more like the renaissance than the industrial revolution,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said about its flagship product, ChatGPT. Over the last few years this AI software has spread virus-like across the globe, swallowing up inane tasks like writing student essays and helping corporate workers with operations and strategy. But its long-term promise is that it will refashion the arts from the ground up.
Chapter 11: All That Road Going (Part One)
If Summer is understood to be the spirit of celebrated excess, if we permit ourselves to thematize it as the triumph of life, brash and verdant, over the contemplating autumn, the immobile winter, and the still-thawing spring, this summer of which I speak is thesource, the summer in which all others participate when they approximate it here and there and in certain parts.
Mysticism, or the Ego Death of Eros
Empty yourself out. Empty it of everything: all passions and all notions. Now rid yourself of your faculty of reasoning, along with its illusory pretense that it can understand truth. Put a cloud of forgetting between yourself and all creatures and aim your focus up to a cloud of unknowing. Pierce it with your love, not with your mind. Love only God. Now empty yourself of God, for that too is too much. It is your vanity reflected. Empty yourself out even of that Nothing that is left.

Nachlass I
This is the first in a series of posts for paid subscribers in which I share my research on what is called “the Philosophy of Art.” These notes are the result of painstaking reading and interpretation, and contain quotes from obscure sources that are invaluable for anyone who wants to understand the crisis of nihilism, Hegel’s “End of Art” thesis, and the possible future of art. From the Nachlass, 3/25/25-4/2/25.
Our Return to Good and Evil
Something was unearthed during the pandemic. Our corruption, the result of a process of disorientation that was sown some five hundred years ago, ended sharply in a quake of fear when we sensed its emergence. In some sense the Event didn’t take place. But the one that could have happened, the pandemic of our premonitions, was enough for us. The ease with which we succumbed to it was even more alarming.
Chapter 10: Pentecost
When the Word of the north traveled down to my earth And woke the sleepers whom I call’d my neighbors Back home things were normal. School was coming to an end. I drank beer in the warm evenings with Duane and Red, Bambrick and Trevor. I took my finals. I went with my grade to Seaside Heights for Prom weekend, a New Jerseyan rite of passage. Some psychedelics were taken in these weeks, but no seminal experiences were had. There was too much anticipation on my mind, and the settings were not ideal.
Chapter 9: Rolling Face in the Plains of Abraham
So I got there. Natacha and Alexandre walked up as I exited the concourse. Alexandre was wearing a black redingote drinking from a can of Pabst; Natacha was wearing a nice dress tightened with a belt, laughing into the phone. The first thing I say in my awkwardness after what’s ups and handshakes is “Natacha, you are taller than I expected”—she took it lightly and laughed. We begin to walk through the streets.
The Winter of Our Shit Content
Two major events occurred recently in the anti-establishment establishment writersphere that exists between New York and London: the publishing of art critic Dean Kissick’s essay The Painted Protest in Harper’s Magazine, and Sam Kriss’s catch-all reviewof contemporary “Alt Lit” autofiction. Kissick’s essay provoked many responses.
Chapter 8: Nietzsche
Before I let the story take off, there is one more character I need to introduce: Nietzsche. Someone you always think you’ve surpassed, but when you return you find him once again so far beyond you.
Nietzsche Goes to Naples
In his book on Hölderlin’s hymn “The Ister,” Heidegger develops an interpretative technique that we can call “stating the obvious”: he suggests the hymn is a meditation on the Ister river (the Danube) itself and inner essence, and is not an allegory for any neoplatonic diatribe about the soul or anything else.
Chapter 7: Alexandre the Great
In fact I hadn’t learned all that much. Alexandre made me realize this. I had consumed a lot of material, but it was done in quite a general way, without a real eye toward forming a direct intuitive relationship with art needed for one’s flesh to become a great poem, without any representational mediation through critic-approved apparatuses. Alexandre was an antagonist to my brain.

David Lynch and How Death Makes Profound
David Lynch is dead. Already, HBO has put his films on its homepage for those slackers quietly looking to finally watch the late master. Lynch was alive last week, and while he had plenty of fans, we didn’t see this much outpouring of love. Would we have heard this much praise if he had released a new film? After Norm MacDonald died, his reception was never better: thousands of his clips proliferated online, dominating YouTube shorts and social media avatars.
Chapter 6: The Young Girls
There were three young girls, and with them three successive stages of the spirit: first the basics, with all their let-downs; then the avant-garde, with sensual thrills and depressive lacerations; and finally the Classic, which declined to let its hair down and stopped me at the doorway. The first was a girl named Kelsey, a hostess and a saxophone player, and, just in that way, girlish yet goofy. I met her when I was waiting tables at a restaurant, saving up money for a car.
Beyond the Profit Principle
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, two of our species’ leaders, have both expressed their wish for humanity to grow exponentially. They believe that the more humans we bring into existence, the more cultural and scientific geniuses we’ll have on the planet—or planets, if their spacefaring ventures work out. On Lex Fridman’s podcast, Bezos wagered: “If we had a trillion humans, we would have at any given time a thousand Mozarts and a thousand Einsteins.” But is that true?
Chapter 1: The Lecture on the Incels
“…And so unlike Russia, which saw the theoretician Trotsky leading the glorious Red Army, or France, which has produced countless luminaries of communist speculation, America, despite being a country founded on a revolution, is stuck under the capitalist reign of commodities, because we didn’t KILL the FATHER…” the professor said with a surge of libidinal gusto, red in the face and slamming his fist on the table, “…we didn’t kill the English King.” After chugging the rest of his beer and...

Achilles and the Ideology of War
Communist historian Domenico Losurdo once argued in exhaustive book-length form that Heidegger followed an “ideology of war” (Kriegsideologie) popular among the German right of his day and that even his abstruse writings on Being and “authenticity” are somehow tainted by this association.
Resisting the Symbolic: Homer
To resist the symbolic reading, to descend back out of the heavens of archetypes and back to the mythos, the language, the flesh and color… How can we free art from the argument, to allow something to come to presence by refusing to turn it into a vehicle for representing an idea, to let beauty happen rather than obstruct it with our clumsy truth-seeking?
