As much as I love the Wicked movie, I don’t listen to much of Ariana Grande’s music. But while watching The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime, I recognized her voice in the song “I Wish I Hated You.” Curious, I looked it up to confirm it was hers... and that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole of parasocial commentary. Suddenly I was scrolling through seemingly endless hot takes that dissected the lyrics line by line, treating the whole song (and album) as if it were Ariana’s private diary.

Every time I need to message my child’s father, I groan. When he makes a partial child support payment, I shudder. I open the spreadsheet, update the numbers, and feel my blood pressure rise. Lately, the payment is generally never what he promised. His excuses pile up, always last minute. Every missed or shorted payment reminds me of the years that keep slipping by without him making any real effort for our daughter. If I write to him in solely my own words, it comes out as rage or pure emotion.
