GUEST APPEARANCE: Attack on migrant workers should mobilize us all
This week, immigration agents boarded a bus of farmworkers, armed with guns and a list of union leaders they ultimately arrested and later imprisoned at the Buffalo (Batavia) Service Processing Center. What is surprising about these abductions in broad daylight is not the banality of their recent application. In fact, since President Trump took office over 100 days ago, immigration officials seem intent (though unlikely to meet) their goal of deporting over a million immigrants annually.

The Immigration state and its everyday accomplices
After a year of watching thousands of people suffer a genocide fueled in large part by U.S. dollars and technology, the usual order of life on university campuses has been upended. Students, staff and faculty have protested, picketed, rallied, and exercised a long tradition of “expressive activity” that has come to define the unique space that inhabits university life.

DACA legal services: One federal policy, different local implementation approaches
In the United States, the absence of federal funding and coordination for immigration legal services often means that local resources determine immigrants' access to justice. Many of these resources go toward supporting immigrants caught in the detention and deportation system. Yet local support is also critical for implementing federal benefits programs such as the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The Liberal Plan: Fighting COVID One Moral Failing at a Time
In recent months, in the run-up to an urgent vaccine rollout, communities across the U.S. have seen our COVID-19 infection rates soar. A predictable spike emerged right after Christmas, as families across the country were urged to stay home. Amidst the frustration and devastation as the country closes in on 400,000 deaths, much of the focus from political leaders has centered on individual failings in refusing to wear a mask and social distance, and just, stay home.
After Trump, the Fight for Immigrant Rights Will Continue Under Biden
I have spent most of recent weeks bleary-eyed and exhausted, and now momentarily relieved for a Democratic win. But for many advocating for and with the immigrants in our families and communities, our tired rage is thoroughly bipartisan. The terror I have felt is not simply what another four years of the Trump administration would bring to the immigrants in my life once the counting and litigating dust settled. Rather, it is now the fear of continued Democratic destruction and complacency.
All Undocumented Immigrants Deserve Citizenship—Not Just “Essential…
We must stop thinking about citizenship for immigrants in terms of who deserves it. (Photo by Sarah Reingewirtz, Pasadena Star-News/SCNG) The Covid-19 pandemic has brought renewed attention to the large number of undocumented immigrants who work in “essential jobs,” ranging from agriculture to hospital workers. Many of them labor in workplaces like meatpacking where the virus is notoriously rampant, and few to no protections exist.
All Undocumented Immigrants Deserve Citizenship-Not Just “Essential Workers”
The pandemic has made clear that we need to provide citizenship for all immigrants, and safe working conditions for all workers. Individuals should be granted citizenship simply because they are human and they are here. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought renewed attention to the large number of undocumented immigrants who work in “essential jobs,” ranging from agriculture to hospital workers.
Philanthropy Must Continue Its Support for Young Immigrants — Even With the Supreme Court DACA Victory (Opinion)
The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is an enormous victory for the nation’s nearly 700,000 DACA beneficiaries. But the fight is far from over. While we should celebrate the continuation of DACA for now, philanthropy and local governments must reinvest in community organizations that have made this historic program a reality for young immigrants and their families.
Blog Post: A Call for Radical Labor Solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter Movement
Five labor scholars write to denounce racial injustice and call for radical labor solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and all movements for racial justice.
Gearing up for immigrant rights in a Trump administration
Immigration has played a central role for both Republicans and Democrats in this election cycle, with consistent calls by Trump and his supporters for a border wall, religious tests, and a plan to deport even those individuals granted reprieve under President Obama. To be sure, the Trump campaign has promised mass deportations, a further border crackdown, and a reversal of existing rights and programs that benefit undocumented immigrants.
A Higher Minimum Wage Alone Won't Solve Low-Wage Workers' Problems
This month both California and New York passed path-breaking legislation to increase the minimum wage, up to $15 by 2022 for California and by 2018 for the slightly more ambitious Empire State. Opponents, especially in low-wage industries, decried the negative impact the change will have on their purportedly slim profit margins. Meanwhile, advocates praised the move, citing widening inequality and soaring corporate profits as evidence of needed change.
