Juneteenth is traditionally celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It recognizes the day in 1865 that the last Black American slaves learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Raleigh Thursday, June 18th Wake County Libraries is hosting several programs commemorating Juneteenth this week. Two programs will be held Thursday. “K through 5th Adventures” will teach young kids about the holiday.
