Extreme North American heatwaves in 1941 and 2021 drove widespread but contrasting impacts
Abstract The 2021 Western North American heatwave was among the most extreme heatwaves ever recorded. Recent work has identified one event of comparable magnitude and location in 1941. However, little is known about the impacts of the 1941 heatwave. Here we review 357 issues of 25 news publications from before, during, and after the 1941 heatwave, and we uncover widespread impacts including mortality, water shortages, crop damages, wildfires, flooding, and changes to social customs and behaviours.
River dynamics in a warming climate
Abstract References and Notes Information & Authors Metrics & Citations Check Access References Figures Tables Media Share Abstract Surface sediments in polar and high mountain regions underlain by permafrost—ground that is frozen for two consecutive years or longer—undergo seasonal freezing and thawing. This yearly cycle influences river dynamics by changing water flow and susceptibility to erosion. Consequently, a warming climate can change river configurations in cold landscapes.
The Streamflow Response to Multi‐Day Warm Anomaly Events: Sensitivity to Future Warming and Spatiotemporal Variability by Event Magnitude
1 Introduction Persistent warm temperature anomalies, from warm spells to heatwaves, have cross-disciplinary relevance due to their far-reaching impacts including those on human health (Schuman, 1972), wildfires (Ruffault et al., 2020), agriculture (Brás et al., 2021), infrastructure (Stone et al., 2021), drought (Afroz et al., 2023), and flooding (White et al., 2023).
How Arctic landscapes and Canadian cityscapes share a similar pattern
The year 2023 has been one of extremes, from heatwaves that baked millions across the globe and made the summer the world’s hottest on record to the fires that forced tens of thousands to evacuate across Western Canada. From the feel of surprising warmth in the mid-winter sun to the crinkle and cracking of leaves dried by drought, you can witness climate change with all of your senses.

High Arctic channel incision modulated by climate change and the emergence of polygonal ground - Nature Communications
Abstract Stream networks in Arctic and high-elevation regions underlain by frozen ground (i.e., permafrost) are expanding and developing in response to accelerating global warming, and intensifying summertime climate variability. The underlying processes governing landscape dissection in these environments are varied, complex and challenging to unravel due to air-temperature-regulated feedbacks and shifts to new erosional regimes as climate change progresses.
