The Kronos Quartet will record its first-ever full-length live album at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. The Grammy-winning string ensemble has released over 70 albums but never a complete live recording. The performances will feature works reflecting American history, including pieces by John Coltrane and Billie Holiday. A new work by Minneapolis-based artists Joe Rainey and Andrew Broder will also premiere at the shows.

South African cellist Abel Selaocoe returns to the Twin Cities to play with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for an uplifting concert of 20th-century avant-garde gems and the U.S. premiere of a piece by British composer Edmund Finnis. The SPCO artistic partner leads the ensemble, guides the audience in song, and sings his own blissful vocals. While Selaocoe shared his own compositions in past concerts, he now presents other composers’ takes on older material.

On January 11, comedian Paula Poundstone made a short video for social media: “Day 307 of Saving our Democracy.” She encouraged viewers to make sure they were registered to vote, and she bounced one time on a pogo stick, stating she’d add one bounce each day until the mid-term elections on Nov. 3. “I said from the very beginning of this thing, I will add a pogo on my pogo stick every day until we take back the House and the Senate,” Poundstone told me in a recent interview.

Two years ago, Courtney Remeš restarted violin lessons for the first time since college and joined an adult orchestra at Minneapolis’ MacPhail Center for Music. Time spent learning music provides “a really great outlet,” said Remeš, a web developer by day. “You can’t look at your phone at rehearsal or while playing.” Like Remeš, about 63% of Minnesotans say they’re involved in the arts in their everyday lives, compared to only 49% nationally. For some, it’s a continuation of a childhood pursuit.

“The Jungle,” a play about a refugee settlement during the 2015 European migrant crisis, soars in a new production by Mixed Blood Theatre. Artistic Director Mark Valdez masterfully directs an incredible cast of seasoned and emerging actors. The production is well-crafted, and perhaps too beautiful. British playwrights Joe Robertson and Joe Murphy mine trauma for poetics, and don’t fully escape the colonial gaze at the project’s foundation.

The program featured a concerto by 20th-century Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz, works by Sergei Rachmaninoff played by Israeli-American guest pianist Inon Barnatan, and a sumptuous performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” Throughout, the musicians carried the audience on a storytelling adventure through music.

Review: Gregorian leans into spectacle but still lets music shine

Gregorian, the German-based vocal group performing pop and rock in the style of Gregorian chant, leaned fully into spectacle for their second appearance at the Fitzgerald Theater, following a 2024 visit. With lasers, glow-in-the-dark ribbons, and beams of light slicing through the air, the monk-clad, classically trained singers delivered a glitzy show — pressed velour robes and all. The music held up, too. The program could have used more actual Gregorian chant, which proved the strongest material.

Forest spirits come alive onstage in play-turned-dance, ‘Maharu’

Minneapolis-based playwright and performer Kasano Mwanza began working on his play, “Maharu,” a decade ago. Someday, he said, it will become a full theatrical production. But this month, it comes alive as something else: a dance. The production, by Contempo Physical Dance company and showing March 21 at St. Paul’s O’Shaughnessy, offers a sort of cross-cultural exchange between Zambia, where Mwanza was born, and the Afro-Brazilian roots of Contempo’s choreography.

Two new theatrical works in the Twin Cities – one showing now at the Children’s Theatre Company and one opening March 7 at the Guthrie – put “play” into plays and ask audiences to consider what that means. The Children’s Theatre Company’s “Forts: Build Your Own Adventure” isn’t a play in a traditional sense, but a participatory, collective sort of improv performance – and wonderfully playful. The “performance” I attended transpired much like my own memories of fort-making.

Minneapolis is moving closer to a permanent memorial for George Perry Floyd with the launch of a new student design competition . Organised by Rise & Remember , a group formed in the wake of Floyd’s murder by police on 25 May 2020, in partnership with Floyd’s family and the city of Minneapolis, the project grew out of research conducted by architecture students at the University of Minnesota. Students from across Minnesota are invited to submit designs for a permanent memorial at a 2,247 sq.

The Minnesota Orchestra rang in the Lunar New Year with a celebratory evening of music, culture and a dancing dragon. Featuring both folk and contemporary music from China, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea and beyond, the show emphasized cross-cultural explorations even as it honored musical traditions of countries who mark their calendars by the moon. Pipa player Gao Hong and the Carleton College Chinese Music Ensemble got things started with a pre-show in the atrium before the concert.

In 1989, sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third space” in his book “The Great Good Place.” Separate from home and work, he defined third spaces as outside of those realms — perhaps a coffee shop or art gallery, a museum or bookstore. They are open, accessible and social. They are places to gather and build community, and Oldenburg argued that they’re key to democracy. A lot has happened in the three and a half decades since that book was published.
