The report warns that the erosion of rule of law, judicial independence, and public security is making it harder for countries to translate economic potential into broad-based prosperity. The latest Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI) reveals that Africa has not abandoned its dream of a visa-free continent, but the journey just became more complicated. According to the 2025 AVOI, the continent continues to make progress in opening its borders; however, that progress is being offset by countries introducing digital travel authorisations that still require approval before departure.

Investigation Reveals Burkinabè Military Kill 1000 Civilian in Two Years

​On 14 December 2023, tragedy struck Bouro, a small village in Burkina Faso’s Sahel region, changing the trajectory of many families forever. Burkinabè military forces and allied militias attacked the community, killing numerous civilian residents. Samer (not his real name), a resident of the community, told Human Rights Watch (HRW) that 19 of his relatives were killed in the attack. ​“I found my family and my neighbour’s family massacred. My wives [and] my children were dead,” Samer told HRW.
