There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book, and it’s always good to stop doom scrolling and get a digital detox once in a while. That’s why in honor of Black History Month, we rounded up five Black Texas authors who are making a splash in the literary world. Don’t worry—we’ve got something for everyone, from poetry to children’s books to memoirs to thrillers.

By the afternoon of Feb. 28, Rev. Dianne Garcia will have walked 90 miles—from the Dilley Detention Center to the San Antonio Immigration Court—in the hope that her pilgrimage brings awareness to the conditions inside the facility. Garcia, pastor of the immigrant-led Roca de Refugio Church, has seen 18 members of her congregation detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since last May. To her, the nearly 26 miles she walks each day pale in comparison to what detainees are enduring.

A Texas high school boy’s basketball team is literally balling this week as they celebrate their record-breaking win. During a Feb. 10 game, Fayetteville High School not only beat Buckholts High School 120-25, but scored an astonishing 40 three pointers, beating the previous National Federation of State High School Associations record. Meadow Heights High School in Patton, Missouri previously held the record since 2006, when they scored 36 three pointers.
