Bando has been the most reliable player in coach Kelly Graves’ four years with the Ducks, starting every game and averaging about 10 points an outing each season.

Hosanna Christian outlasts Chiloquin comeback attempt
CHILOQUIN — Chiloquin boys basketball isn’t the tallest team. The Panthers know that, but they take pride in being one of the fastest and scrappiest teams in their league. Schroeder's career night powers Chiloquin past Hosanna Christian
CHILOQUIN — When Chiloquin girls basketball played Hosanna Christian earlier this season, they let the Lions chip away at a handsome lead late in the game. 'Try to stop me'
When Madison Shearer, a Henley senior, first told her parents she wanted to wrestle, they shut her down. Her dad, worried about the thoughts and intentions of teenage boys rolling around on a mat with his freshman daughter, told her no. “I don’t feel comfortable with you wrestling boys,” Shearer says he told her. His response wasn’t abnormal, and nor was his reluctance about girls wrestling boys unprecedented.

You can spot Ken Vieyra in a Lost River hat and polo on the Raiders’ girls basketball bench. Or maybe in the visiting students’ section or talking to the opponent’s assistant principal or athletic director. It doesn’t seem to matter for Vieyra who you are, where you’re from or even what school you go to. “To meet him is to love him,” Lost River principal Jamie Ongman said.

After a slow start, Chiloquin powered to a 26-6 halftime lead, holding the Lions to just two field goals in the first half. New year, new editor: changes coming to Herald and News sports
A new year is likely to bring changes. Resolutions, lifestyle changes, new hobbies and perhaps, promotions. At least that’s the case for me. You may have noticed a new name at the top of the sports section, or a new title under my headshot. That’s right, there’s a new editor in town. When I was originally hired as a sportswriter for the Herald and News, the plan was always to prepare me for the job of sports editor in anticipation of Steve Matthies’ retirement.

Rodeo family
Herman Anderson started competing in rodeo with calf riding when he was about six years old. “I only did it once,” he said, laughing. “After I got up with a mouth full of dirt, I decided roping was a lot more fun.” Since then Anderson, a Klamath tribal member and a rancher in Beatty, competes in team roping and jackpots; and this year, he qualified for Senior Team Roping in the Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) in Las Vegas, which started earlier this week.

Georgia State focuses on high-tempo offense ahead of season opener
If you had been in Georgia State Stadium early last week, you would have heard Rocky Top blaring through the speakers in the baseball-field-turned-football-stadium. The tune is a song commonly associated with Tennessee athletics, the Panthers’ non-conference season-opening opponent, and is played at many of the Volunteers’ home games, such as Saturday when they host Georgia State in Knoxville. “I’m tired of that song to be honest with you,” starting quarterback Dan Ellington said.
An Overseas Dream: Atlanta’s stars head overseas to supplement WNBA income

Water lapped over the edges of the McAuley Aquatic Center dive pool – home of the swimming-and-diving competition at the 1996 Olympic Games. The sound of voices and splashing water echoed through the now-enclosed center in the wistful way sound carriers in indoor pools. “Atlanta 96” bins and 23-year-old Olympic flags and timers sat forgotten in a supply closet.
Angel McCoughtry wants to play in finale but Dream says she’s not cleared
The Atlanta Dream dropped their 12th straight game amidst rumors that franchise star Angel McCoughtry wanted to return for the team’s final regular-season game. The 87-83 loss to the Chicago Sky Tuesday night at State Farm Arena marked the Dream’s 22nd loss of the season. And with just five wins, the team could desperately use the return of five-time WNBA All-Star, two-time FIBA world champion and two-time gold-medal Olympian McCoughtry. “You can’t teach what Angel has,” coach Nicki Collen said.

“It would be nice if it would just go away. But it’s the case that never goes away.” Those words, spoken to KTLA in Los Angeles by retired prosecutor Stephen Kay, sum up his feelings on the Manson family killings, one of the most notorious mass murder cases in U.S. history. Kay, now 76, served as second chair in the prosecution of cult leader Charles Manson and members of his “family.” Early on the morning of Aug.
