A few weeks ago, I was at the incredibly well-organised JobTech Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. This short essay is me untangling my still messy thinking about jobs and the job of creating jobs. But before we get into it, a few words about the event itself. “It’s also easy to lose yourself bouncing from one event to another,” I wrote in 2023. The JobTech meeting was the opposite. Clogged pipes cannot carry any water, and the seed-to-series funding market is full of what few people are buying, despite the increase in local growth-stage funds. We have an interesting situation in African VC. On one side, dozens of (2021-’23 seed vintage) companies are stuck in pre-series limbo. On the other hand, almost all series-stage businesses are hacking their way through an unforgiving peri-series market jungle.
