Thanks To TikTok, This Throwback Lip Look Is More Popular Than Ever
(Beauty) Move over smoky eye. by Simedar Jackson just now @byamicole We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article. There’s a good chance your favorite beauty brand just launched a lip product. With less than six months left in the year, there’s enough evidence to say that 2024 will be one of lips.
For The Queer Community, Hair Is A Celebration Of Identity
(Hair) Self-expression is at the root of it. by Simedar Jackson just now Simedar Jackson After years of stressing over the length and curl pattern of my hair in an effort to achieve a socially acceptable form of femininity, I finally found the courage to cut it all off when I came out. Before then, hair always held power over me rather than for me.
2016 RB/FSTEC Awards: Technical perfection
This year’s class of social media standouts found surprising ways to break through on popular platforms, reinvent their voice on established ones and gain footing in the “brand”-new worlds of Snapchat, Instagram and more.
The Silk Bonnet Is More Than Just A TikTok Hair Trend – Here's Why
(Hair) Practical and stylish. by Simedar Jackson 2 minutes ago @slipsilkpillowcase I have a bone to pick with movies that show its Black actress clamoring out of bed without even a scarf protecting her hair. It immediately pulls me out of the story and directs my thoughts to those in the writer’s room who failed to speak with a Black woman about must-do, nighttime hair norms.
A Clarifying Shampoo & Hydrating Conditioner For Natural Hair

Kellogg plans a cereal cafe to revamp image, boost sales
In an effort to rebrand cereal amid slumping sales, CPG giant Kellogg is opening a brick-and-mortar cafe in New York City, according to the Associated Press. Bowls will cost between $6.50 and $7.50, and will feature options that go beyond the average boxes in the cereal aisle, combining varieties like Special K and Frosted Flakes with add-ons such as pistachios and lemon zest, the AP says. In addition, the cafe will serve ice cream, juice and coffee.
Cult Black Hair Products That Will Go Down In Beauty History
Defining what makes a beauty product reach “cult” status is an imperfect science. Does it come after we can look back with (somewhat) fond memories? Or is it something unintentionally assigned by the people lapping up a new launch at light speed? With beauty always growing, even a TikTok-viral product that sells out immediately seems like only a flashing moment in time. Still, when you come across a beauty product worthy of idolization, you can somehow always recognize it.
Dermatologists Say Everyone Over 40 Needs These 8 Products In Their Skin Care Routine
It's well understood that our beauty and wellness needs drastically change as we age. Weeknight margaritas get swapped for green juices and spicy acne solutions are replaced with sensitive skin formulas. As anti-aging products dominate global skin care shelves and Botox reigns as the most popular non-surgical procedure amongst all age groups, the industry leads us to believe a near obsession with wrinkles is the only direction in which to steer your routine.
The Role Black Women Have Played On The Biggest Nail Trends Throughout The Years
When PRISCAVera, the edgy fashion brand loved by "it-girls," sent long, square acrylic nails stacked high with ephemeral, 3D bubbles down its Spring/Summer 2023 runway, the media called it the " Euphoria Effect." And then there's Vivienne Westwood, whose runway models are known to wear manicures just as artistic as the late designer's clothes - the elaborate nails from her Spring/Summer 2023 collection were met with particular praise.
Do Trendy LED Masks *Really* Improve Your Skin? Dermatologists Explain
As cosmetic treatments and advanced skin care steadily gain popularity, beauty enthusiasts' appetite for technical devices once exclusive to dermatologists has also increased. Light emitting diode (also known as LED) tools are among the most in-demand at-home skin care tech devices because they can treat a variety of skin types and concerns with virtually no risks or side effects.
The Best LED Lights For Every Skin Concern, According To Experts
23 hours ago For nearly three years now, Raquel Harris, fighter and owner of The Champion Experience, has been getting her hair done by Ashley Jordan, a New York City-based natural hairstylist specializing in silk press and color. She goes in for trims and a wash and set every six to eight weeks for straight …
How To Buy Perfume Online & Avoid Buyer’s Regret Original
The only thing better than ordering from Sephora late at night, in bed, with a glass of wine in hand is that feeling when everything works and there are no returns to pretend you’ll make later. Despite the endorphin spike we get from unboxing packages, online shopping for beauty comes with risks — particularly when we venture into the category of fragrance.
These Under-Eye Masks Got Rid Of My Dark Circles In Just 15 Minutes
In our series Trial Run, TZR editors and writers put the buzziest new beauty products to the test and share their honest reviews. This week, beauty writer Simedar Jackson is testing the buzzy Topicals Faded Under Eye Masks. The seasonal marathon during the month of December until the new year is full of office holiday parties, end-of-year work rushes, and Sagittarius birthday celebrations that all but destroy any semblance of sleep cycle normalcy and routine.
This Buzzy Hand Treatment Has Completely Transformed My Cracked Cuticles
In our series Trial Run, TZR editors and writers put the buzziest new beauty products to the test and share their honest reviews. This week, beauty writer Simedar Jackson is testing the Soft Services Theraplush. Despite my love and respect for all things beauty, there are still some product categories I struggle to get behind.
Dermatologists Say Chemical Peels Are The One Treatment To Get This Winter
(Skin) Glow baby, glow. by Simedar Jackson Updated: 12 minutes ago Originally Published: November 29, 2022 svetikd/E+/Getty Images Colder weather and grayer skies are typically key indicators that it’s time to begrudgingly bring out your happy lamp again.
How The Tradition & Meaning Of Braids Evolved Over Time
Although hair braiding is a hairstyle found throughout cultures, the practice holds a revered place in the Black community. As Black people have voluntarily and involuntarily moved throughout the world, the specific culture of hair braiding has transformed to reflect the impact of history and communal change. What began as an extension of ancestral customs has evolved into tools of survival, functionality, community and even artistic expression.
Is The Era Of DTC Beauty Officially Behind Us?
In July, Glossier announced its first-ever retail partnership with Sephora, marking a critical deviation from the brand's previous direct-to-consumer business model. After years of demonstrating the branding power of a digital-first approach by reaching a unicorn valuation of $1.8 billion as of 2021, Glossier's move raises questions about the future of direct-to-consumer and the indie brands that overwhelmingly rely upon it.
I Tried The Buzzy New RHA Filler For Fine Lines & Bonus
Standing Appointment is our review series that investigates the best new and notable cosmetic procedures in the aesthetics space and determines whether or not they are worth trying for yourself. This week, our writer tried the new RHA fillers. Whether you're a cosmetic treatment fanatic or a measured skeptic, interest in aesthetic enhancements show no signs of slowing down.
The Skin Care Industry Needs To Fix How It Treats Acne In Melanated Skin
Acne is the most common skin condition in America — and yet, many POC are hesitant to get professional help for their acne woes.
There's a reason why some of the beauty products you love always seem to be sold out. Over the last two years, COVID has played a role in bringing supply chains near to a halt. Factory shutdowns in various parts of the world, particularly in China - which houses approximately 30% of global manufacturing - have limited the availability of products we use every day.
The Best Way To Lay Your Edges And Keep Hair Healthy and Strong
When I sat down in my new stylist’s chair, I was nervous. After years of being subjected to professionals who only pretended to understand Black hair, I’d become terrified to allow anyone with a pair of shears anywhere near my curls.
Move Over Lip Fillers — This Buzzy Cosmetic Treatment Is Coming For Your Crown
TikTok has undoubtedly become the epicenter of trendsetting for both fashion and beauty, and according to the dangerously addictive platform, 2022 will be the year of lip blushing. Cosmetic tattooing is far from a new innovation, however, the makeup side of the app has recently become inundated with viral videos of lip blush reviews and enticing before and afters.
That Red, Bumpy Patch Of Skin Might Not Be A Breakout — Here's What The Pros Say
Why does it feel like right when a skin care routine seems to be working its magic, an errant breakout sends you back to running damage control? Usually, you can blame a flareup on the monthly onset of hormones or that one night you “forgot” to remove your makeup. But, if you’re like me, you may have experienced a bout of skin rebellion that didn’t quite look like your regular row, evaded your typical mode of attack, and seemed to hang around longer than normal.
Everything You Need To Know About Clinical Treatments For Darker Skin
As a Black skincare professional who treats mostly Black women, I understand the reluctance to try certain cosmetic procedures. There’s still an assumption that darker skin is impervious to aging, which may be one reason we don’t pursue these treatments. But there are others: Traditionally, chemical peels and laser were viewed as unsuitable for darker skin tones, which are more at risk for scarring or hyperpigmentation.
How I Get A Natural Looking Spray Tan As A Woman Of Color
When the topic of self tanner comes up in Black and brown spaces, you’ll likely hear something along the lines of, “I’m already brown, why would I need to tan?” I was often the one with this response until I tried a Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pad on a whim. For the following two days, people gave me ceaseless compliments, and the skin care benefits I’d been willingly missing out on became all too obvious.
How to Treat Keloids on Black Skin
Photo-Illustration: by The Cut; Photos: Getty Images When I got my first-ever secret tattoo at the tender (and under) age of 16, I expected my mom to be livid. I braced myself for the typical parental admonishment around how I would feel about it on my wedding day in 20 years. What I did not foresee, however, was a sobering reminder that keloids run in my family and that what seemed like a fun, rebellious moment could quickly become a saga of frustration and suffering if I wasn’t careful.
This Is The Type Of Facial You Should Be Asking For In Your 30s, 40s, & 50+
2021 is unequivocally the golden age of skin care. The category boom is obvious as new products launch unceasingly and your social media doom scrolling is bound to take you down a SkinTok rabbit hole.

After Summer 2020, Have Beauty Brands Made Tangible Strides Towards Diversity?
This time last year, the brutal murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others forced the world to finally reckon with the reality of racism and police violence in America. While this reality is not new, the stillness created by modern history’s most harrowing pandemic brewed the perfect and unfortunate conditions for people to pay attention more than ever before.
After 5 Years, This Was The Natural Hair Milestone I Never Expected To Have
(Hair) Writer Simedar Jackson on her complex relationship with her curls. By Simedar Jackson Simedar Jackson I’m going to be extremely honest when I say, until now, I have had very few moments where I genuinely liked having big, curly hair. Yes, as much as I tried to love my afro it just wasn’t sitting right with me.

This $1 Product Is the Best Beauty Purchase I've Ever Made
There are very few things that give me greater joy than pulling open the heavy doors of a makeup store and taking in the smell of perfume and the endless lines of beauty products. It's a beauty-obsessed girl's heaven and, if allowed, I could spend many hours and ungodly amounts of cash in that place. That being said, there are some times when I don't have extra money to blow (let's face it, I never really do) and I actually only need one thing.
Why Vitamin C Gives Your Fall Skincare Routine Superpowers
As we approach fall and cooler temps, kudos to you for keeping up with your daily dose of head-to-toe sunscreen. (Oh, and if you’re not still wearing sunscreen every day, we make a case for it below.) It turns out, however, even though we’re bundling up and spending less time in the sunshine, sunscreen alone might not be enough to fight against sun damage and premature aging. That’s where vitamin C comes to the rescue.

Hyperpigmentation Got You Down? Here’s How to Beat it Once & For All
Between acne-prone and oily skin, hyperpigmentation holds its own as a notorious and widespread skincare concern. Those darkened patches are reluctant to exit stage left once they arrive, testing both your patience and the lasting-power of your makeup. But there is a silver lining to this stormy cloud. When armed with a product routine tailored to your skin tone and type, hyperpigmentation can be significantly improved and, more importantly, prevented. What is Hyperpigmentation?
How to Wear Glossy Eye Makeup Without Looking Greasy
I first discovered the liquid goodness that is glossy eyes a year ago on the Instagram account @V93oo. The account, run by curator Mushtaq, who was recently dubbed the “anti-beauty blogger” by Dazed, is dedicated to creative makeup rather than perfection. Amidst faces half-painted in blue-man-group blue, bright orange eyelashes and forehead swipes of fluorescent green, wet-looking eyelids abound for their tendency to be perfectly imperfect.
How Choosing to Go "Natural" Didn't Teach Me What I Thought It Would
I spent a cumulative $2,000 on my hair the last year I wore weave. My regimen was strict and perfectly orchestrated to minimize the number of days I spent with my hair laid bare. I booked appointments a month in advance and spent hours in the depths of YouTube reviews before ever making a purchase. Weilding a flat iron to blend my kinky hair with Brazilian waves became second nature.
5 Skin Stickers That Make Treating Zits Actually Kind Of Fun
Let's be real: We're never excited to see acne and dark spots pop up on our face — especially because they always seem to do so at the most inconvenient times. But if pimples insist on being a part of our lives, then the least we ask for is a fun fix for them.
Four Women on Their Favorite Natural Hair Styles
For generations, Black women have been told that our natural hair is unacceptable in one way or another: Tignon Laws dating back to the 18th century required “gens de couleur” to cover their hair in public, literally making natural hair illegal. The army enforced a strict ban on natural styles up until last year.
One Woman Talks to 14 Men at Glossier's New Store in New York
Streetside, Glossier’s new flagship store is like anything else you may happen upon in Soho, albeit suspiciously pristine for New York City’s accustomed grime.
Bob's Burgers, A Hangover and Soup Make Up My Sunday Scaries
I wake up in Westport, Connecticut at my friend Marina’s house. My frontal lobe is literally pulsating. I grab my phone to check the time. Way too early. Must sleep more. My alarm goes off seemingly inside of my eardrum. Why did I set an alarm? Alarm dismissed and back to bed for just a little more shut eye. The pool guys who apparently aren’t supposed to work on Sundays start drilling into the ground causing the entire basement as well as my brain to rattle around.
Someone called 911 after getting a shitty haircut, which you’ve probably wanted to do every time you got bangs
Is there any single moment more heartbreaking than the one in which the stylist turns you around and shows you your new horrible haircut and you have to smile through the tears and be like, "…I love it" because you're a huge pussy who's afraid of confrontation? Not this dude! In Wisconsin, a 22-year-old guy went into a regular barber shop for a lil snip-snip. According to the Wisconsin Sate Journal, all the customer wanted was a little off the top and a bit shorter on the sides.
What his underwear says about him and how seriously he takes your relationship
Just like the way a guy dresses says a lot about him, his underwear of choice says a lot about what he's like in the bedroom and how seriously he takes your relationship. And since guys never throw their underwear away — they wear them for so long, they literally disintegrate off of their body — you've probably gotten a good look at them. Whether he's packing it in briefs or letting it all hang loose in boxers, here's what his choice of underwear says about him.
The best, weirdest, funniest, pettiest, sluttiest, most important babe moments of 2017
This was babe's first full year of existence. We started off the year with exactly two staff members, and now we've just hired our 10th. Babe grew the way it did because we care about what our readers do. Some of it is serious, like the fucked-up rape culture that's touched every single person reading this in some way. Or it's about racism, our current state of politics that make have made me ask if a real event was an Onion article or not. But we contain multitudes, y'all.
Every single thing Kylie ‘Klepto’ Jenner stole from Rihanna in 2017
If imitation truly is the sincerest form of flattery, you could say Kylie Jenner is a really, really big fan of Rihanna's — like, the biggest. Because between Kylie Jenner and Huda Kattan, Rihanna had to do some serious back-watching in 2017. These girls are out here coming for her coins and if she doesn't look out she might just find herself irrelevant in 2018 — I'm totally kidding. Kylie couldn't clip her own left toenail without checking on how Rihanna did it first.
The holiday gift guide for your man who’s not really your man but he’s your man
So, you’ve found yourself in a situationship – AGAIN. Welcome to the club my friend, because relationships are dead and we'd all prefer to torture ourselves with half-baked emotions than commit to anything. Nonetheless, it’s another year with a man who's by no means your man, but you'll be damned if anyone else tries to claim him.
Here are all of the 2017 trends that are gonna look INSANE in the future
I was slathering on a third layer of Glossier's Haloscope before heading out to brunch in my raw hem jeans and crop top last weekend when it struck me: I looked super trendy, which means that in five or so years, I'll look really fucking stupid in pictures. It sent an existential chill through my very core — and if you've ever seen pictures of your parents rocking giant 80s hair, Jeffrey Dahmer glasses and oversized, multicolored sweaters, you know exactly what I mean.
