Cephus files against Wisconsin-Madison for multiple violations
Former Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus is suing the university for violating due process rights, Title IX provisions and breach of contract, the current Detroit Lion said in a lawsuit filed Tuesday afternoon. Cephus, who is seeking unspecified damages for the accused violations, was arrested on second- and third-degree sexual assault charges in Aug. 2018 following a sexual encounter with two 18-year-old UW students in his apartment earlier that April.
Badgers snag four interceptions in Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory - The Daily Cardinal
The Wisconsin (4-3) defense definitely played with some twang after halftime Wednesday afternoon. Facing a middling Wake Forest (3-4) team in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., a flurry of defensive stands and turnovers put Wisconsin ahead for good with a 42-28 victory, clinching their nineteenth-consecutive winning season. It didn’t start well for the Badgers’ secondary, however.
Jack Coan enters transfer portal, will leave Wisconsin Football program - The Daily Cardinal
Quarterback Jack Coan is entering the transfer portal and will be leaving the Wisconsin Football program, Coan and the team announced early last week. After a foot injury sidelined the junior for the first two months of the season, Coan did not play at any point during the 2020 regular season — even after being activated prior to a week eight matchup against No. 16 Iowa. “We had been having conversations throughout with [Coan],” Head Coach Paul Chryst said.
Larsh guts Gophers, celebrates first walk-off winner in style - The Daily Cardinal
In a season with plenty of moments Wisconsin (3-3) football players and coaches would love to forget, Collin Larsh delivered one worth remembering against rival Minnesota (3-4) in week nine. This year’s Axe Game didn’t carry the national attention that then No. 12 Wisconsin and then No. 8 Minnesota played for last season, but the tension was not lacking at Camp Randall for the annual rivalry matchup regardless of either team’s record.
Mertz, Badgers flat on offense again in loss to No. 12 Indiana - The Daily Cardinal
MADISON, WI –– For the second straight week, No. 16 Wisconsin (2-2) had no answers offensively against a respectable defense. Despite six drives into opponent’s territory, the Badgers produced just two scores –– a couple of red-zone field goals –– in a 14-6 loss to No. 12 Indiana (6-1) Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall.
Gameday V: Smattering of cancellations have Big Ten Championship Game eligibilities in question - The Daily Cardinal
As part of Gameday V, The Daily Cardinal’s Simon Farber takes a look around the conference for a couple of high-profile matchups this Saturday. Instead of covering the Big Ten’s upcoming week seven matchups, it’s more notable to talk about which teams aren’t going to be playing this Saturday. With a minimum of six games needed to be eligible for the Big Ten Championship Game, No. 4 Ohio State can not afford another cancellation – they’ve already been sidelined twice by COVID-19 protocols.
Rachad Wildgoose opts out, declares for 2021 NFL Draft - The Daily Cardinal
Wisconsin cornerback Rachad Wildgoose has left the program to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, he announced in a tweet this past Friday morning. The announcement came as a major surprise to Wisconsin fans and Big Ten media alike, given his relatively low draft stock from a national perspective. Wildgoose will forego his senior season with the Badgers, a route few defensive standouts have chosen under Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Nelson healthy, contributing to tough Wisconsin secondary - The Daily Cardinal
Just minutes into the 2019 season, safety Scott Nelson — then a redshirt sophomore — suffered a leg injury that would pull him out of Wisconsin’s week-one win over South Florida. A few days later, he announced on Twitter that his season was abruptly over. Almost fifteen months later, Nelson finally made his return to the playing field.
Mertz out 21 days with confirmed COVID-19 case - The Daily Cardinal
Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz received a second positive test for COVID-19 Tuesday and will be held out of game activity for 21 days, as first reported by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. According to Dodd, backup quarterback Chase Wolf is still waiting for confirmation on his initial positive test. Mertz’s true positive test makes the odds of a false positive for Wolf significantly less likely, given their close proximity in practice and training.
Mertz has Madison dreaming big with historic debut - The Daily Cardinal
MADISON – If you thought using the word “swag” wasn’t cool anymore — Graham Mertz is here to bring it back. “I was happy that we played with a little extra chip on our shoulder and a little extra swag,” Mertz said postgame after No. 14 Wisconsin’s 45-7 victory over Illinois Friday night at Camp Randall. Friday’s game could not have gone any swaggier for the first-time starting quarterback Mertz, who was asked to take over the offense earlier this month in the absence of junior Jack Coan (foot).
Sanborn, Chenal step into bigger roles on Badgers defense - The Daily Cardinal
Veteran linebackers Zack Baun and Chris Orr aren’t in Madison anymore. The two former team leaders — now residing as members of NFL defenses — supplanted themselves in Badger lore last season with a combined 24 sacks: 12.5 for Baun and 11.5 for Orr, good for third and sixth all-time in Wisconsin single-season history, respectively.
Gameday I: Michigan, Penn State face tough road tests early - The Daily Cardinal
As part of Gameday One, The Daily Cardinal takes a look around the Big Ten for this week’s biggest matchups and storylines. While Wisconsin and Illinois will finish up their week one festivities late Friday night, the rest of the Big Ten’s fourteen teams have to wait a couple more hours before kicking off the season.
Mertz taking first-team reps at quarterback - The Daily Cardinal
This wasn’t how the Wisconsin football coaching staff expected the Graham Mertz era to begin, but it’s the one they’re going to have to work with. Mertz has taken over the first-team offensive reps at quarterback following Jack Coan’s non-contact foot injury, head coach Paul Chryst told reporters Monday. Wisconsin later released a statement saying that Coan had undergone successful surgery; there is no timetable on his return.
Freshman Nelson joins stable of talented Badgers linemen - The Daily Cardinal
Paul Chryst has certainly applied his calm, almost-emotionless demeanor to Wisconsin Football’s personnel decisions over his five full seasons as head coach thus far. Known for being patient with young talent, Chryst and his staff most recently redshirted five-star offensive lineman Logan Brown and the school’s highest-rated quarterback in history, Graham Mertz, last fall.
Talk of Big Ten Football restart reaches White House - The Daily Cardinal
President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that he had a “productive meeting” with Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren discussing plans for a 2020 Big Ten football season this fall. Trump added that a potential plan is “on the one yard line,” though there is no indication from the Big Ten that an official plan will be announced soon.
Alvarez: no football student tickets in 2020 - The Daily Cardinal
University of Wisconsin-Madison students will have to jump around from the comfort of their own living rooms this fall. Following the official announcement Wednesday of a 10-game, conference-only Big Ten football schedule, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez released a statement informing students that season tickets will not be made available for the 2020 season.
Uncharacteristic mistakes cost Badgers a Rose Bowl win, extending Wisconsin's Rose Bowl losing streak - The Daily Cardinal
They really should have won. On a beautiful 66-degree, clear-skied afternoon in Pasadena, California, everything felt right in the world for a couple of hours. But now, coupled with a Rose Bowl Game loss, this New Years Day celebration has become a recurring nightmare for the Wisconsin Football program--one filled with excitement, flashes of greatness, and ultimately, disappointment.
Preview: What to know for UW's Rose Bowl showdown with Oregon - The Daily Cardinal
It’s New Year’s Eve, which means we’re just one day away from the 106th edition of the Rose Bowl Game between the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers (10-3, 7-3 Big Ten) and the No. 6 Oregon Ducks (11-2, 8-1 Pac-12).
Wisconsin takes the Axe back, but now have to face juggernaut Ohio State - The Daily Cardinal
A year ago, around this time, Jack Coan wasn’t under center yet. He wasn’t taking snaps in front of a deflated Camp Randall crowd watching their Wisconsin Badgers fall to Minnesota for the first time in 15 seasons. Yet, from the sidelines, he and his teammates experienced the gravity of a loss that would hang on their backs for the next twelve months. “It was terrible,” said center Tyler Biadasz of the loss a season ago.
The latest battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe set to be the biggest in years - The Daily Cardinal
One game. After months of anticipation, a long summer of training, and 13 weeks of the season, that’s all that remains in deciding the winner of the 2019 Big Ten West: one game. It just so happens to feature college football’s oldest rivalry, No. 12 Wisconsin (6-2 Big Ten, 9-2 overall) and No. 8 Minnesota (7-1 Big Ten, 10-1 overall) in the 129th battle for Paul Bunyon’s Axe. “We wouldn’t want this any other way,” said Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor last Saturday.
All eyes on Jonathan Taylor as the Badgers take on Nebraska - The Daily Cardinal
Another week, another trophy matchup in the Big Ten West as No. 14 Wisconsin (4-2 Big Ten, 7-2 overall) faces off with Nebraska (2-4 Big Ten, 4-5 overall) Saturday in the sixth edition of the battle for the Freedom Trophy. The trophy, named to honor United States veterans, depicts half of Camp Randall Stadium--built on a Civil War training ground--and half of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium with a large American flag in the middle. It’s been a long year for head coach Scott Frost and the Cornhuskers.
Outmatched in Columbus, Wisconsin still finds itself in good position for the rest of the year - The Daily Cardinal
The Wisconsin Badgers are a well-disciplined, well-prepared, and well-coached football team. The coaching staff has a plan and they stick to it. But, on afternoons like two Saturdays ago in Columbus, Ohio, none of that mattered. I asked lineman Matt Henningsen to share his thoughts on the Badgers’ gameplan immediately following the 38-7 defeat to now No. 1 Ohio State.
Preview: Badgers hit the road looking to keep perfect season intact - The Daily Cardinal
When then-No. 19 Wisconsin left campus for their season opener in South Florida back in August, there was a significantly smaller spotlight on the team. Many fans and analysts alike had circled the game as a potential upset spot against the Badgers, facing a scrappy USF team in the extreme humidity of hurricane season.
Badgers rout Michigan State, cement status as College Football Playoff contenders - The Daily Cardinal
Michigan State (4-3 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) came to Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, hoping to be the first team to solve No. 8 Wisconsin’s (6-0 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) defense in 2019. But, four quarters later the Spartans left Camp Randall without an answer.
Matt Henningsen powers defensive gem in Badgers win over Northwestern - The Daily Cardinal
“We just didn’t click,” Wisconsin wide receiver A.J. Taylor said postgame. “That’s not us, and we’ll get back to playing Wisconsin football pretty soon.” Although the attitude in the media room from No. 8 Wisconsin’s (4-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) players and coaches was positive, the offensive struggles overshadowed another dominant defensive performance in the Badgers’ 24-15 victory over Northwestern (1-3, 0-2) Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall.
Wisconsin, Michigan set to face off in biggest Big Ten match-up of Week 4 - The Daily Cardinal
After fourteen days off, football is back in Madison. The nation's eyes will be on Camp Randall Stadium as No. 13 Wisconsin (2-0) takes on No. 11 Michigan (2-0) in the Big Ten’s biggest week four matchup. Michigan enters the ballgame fresh off a bye week of their own, and they needed every day of it. The Wolverines hosted a sneaky-good Army team in Week Two and struggled to prove themselves as a top-ten team in the country.
Badgers open home schedule against Central Michigan: Preview - The Daily Cardinal
Central Michigan (1-0) and No. 17 Wisconsin (1-0), two programs that have been playing football since before the turn of the 20th century, will face off for the first time in history Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall. After a dominant performance on the road at South Florida, the Badgers rose two spots in the AP Poll and have a very favorable matchup against the lowly Chippewas.
Badgers pitch second shutout, dominate in 61-0 victory over Central Michigan - The Daily Cardinal
Through eight quarters of football, No. 17 Wisconsin’s defense has yet to allow a single point. They put together another dominant performance Saturday afternoon, as Wisconsin (2-0) defeated Central Michigan (1-1) 61-0 in the Badgers’ home opener at Camp Randall Stadium. All eyes will be on the quarterbacks all season long, and junior Jack Coan has done nothing but impress through two starts under center.
Paul Chryst: Week 1 MVP after new offense obliterates USF - The Daily Cardinal
Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst brought a slightly revamped offense to South Florida last Friday, most notably with the incorporation of Jonathan Taylor into the passing game. Taylor, who led the nation in rushing with 2,194 yards in 2018, had just eight receptions last year. Though the Badgers’ wide receiver unit is solid, adding another aerial weapon in Taylor would make life a lot easier for quarterback Jack Coan in 2019 – and that certainly showed in Week 1.
Lightning strikes four times for Jonathan Taylor in South Florida, as Badgers romp USF - The Daily Cardinal
The lightning subsided shortly after 7 p.m. in South Florida, but running back Jonathan Taylor brought his own thunder to Raymond James Stadium Friday night. An explosive performance in both the running and passing game led No. 19 Wisconsin (1-0) to a dominant 49-0 win at South Florida (0-1). It didn’t take long for Taylor to add a few highlights to his 2019 Heisman Trophy campaign.
Badgers wait out rain, out-run Hawkeyes for series sweep - The Daily Cardinal
Two hours of rain delays weren’t enough to keep No. 21 Wisconsin from earning a series sweep over Iowa Sunday evening at The Goodman softball complex. The Badgers (7-2 Big Ten, 30-5 overall) took the rubber match 4-2 over the Hawkeyes (1-8 Big Ten, 15-18 overall) thanks to aggressive baserunning and strong defense throughout the game. Freshman first baseman Kayla Konwent got the offense started in the bottom of the first inning with a single, extending her hit streak to seven games.

The Twins are showing interest in free-agent first baseman/designated hitter Logan Morrison, reports Pioneer Press' Mike Berardino: With full-squad Spring Training kicking off last Monday, top free agents have finally begun to settle into their new homes for 2018 and beyond. Despite below-average career walk- and strikeout-rates (3.2 BB/9, 7.7 K/9), Abad has a long track record of success as a LOOGY (lefty-one-out-guy).
MLB free agency: Cardinals, Rockies in on Wade Davis

Formerly a starting pitcher, Davis has revived his career in grand fashion after converting to the bullpen in 2014.

The Orioles are reportedly receiving calls from multiple clubs on third baseman Manny Machado this winter, according to FanRag's Jon Heyman. According to Heyman, the Orioles are debating whether or not to extend Machado longterm before free agency.

The Mets are reportedly willing to "consider" signing free agent Adam Lind, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. Olney notes that the club is looking to add a first baseman this winter, following the trade of Lucas Duda to the Rays last August. The New York Daily News reports that Lind is just one name on a long list of first base options that the Mets are pursuing this offseason.
2017 MLB Offseason Preview: Chicago White Sox
Over the past 12 months, the White Sox have undergone a serious overhaul of major league talent. In trading away studs like Chris Sale and Jose Quintana (only to name a few), Chicago has opened the door to a rejuvenated core of young talent. While 2017 produced yet another losing season, most signs point toward a bright future on the South Side in the near future.
White Sox' Carlos Rodon underwent successful shoulder surgery

Rodon is expected to make a full recovery within 6-8 months, and will maintain a normal throwing program this offseason. Lester was removed from his start in the second inning yesterday after surrendering seven earned runs to the Reds, but the left-hander is not expected to miss more than three weeks. Lester, 33, has had an uncharacteristic 2017, with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.274 WHIP.

The Rays have acquired reliever Sergio Romo from the Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.
