Can PIM-3 score predict risk for neonatal mortality vs. SNAPPE II and SNAP II scores in a tertiary surgical neonatal intensive care unit?
Abstract Objective: To assess the accuracy of PIM-3 score in predicting neonatal mortality by comparing it to two established neonatal mortality scores, SNAPPE II and SNAP II. Study design: Retrospective study of all admissions to Great Ormond Street Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the calendar year of 2022. Individual scores were calculated for all admissions using the electronic health records and referring or transfer notes. Admissions <12 h and those with missing data were excluded.
Embryonic origin of cancer in newborn twins
Abstract Studying monozygotic twins who present with identical cancers informs on the developmental origins of childhood tumours. Here, we perform whole genome sequencing on multiple tumour, normal, and placental samples to reconstruct the phylogeny of a soft tissue cancer that spread in utero between monozygotic twins. We demonstrate the origin of the tumour from one twin and time its diversification and transplacental spread to the other twin, showing that the spread occurred only once.
Transient abnormal myelopoiesis requiring advanced neonatal intensive care treatment
Aim Five to thirty percent of neonates with trisomy 21 develop transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) with a high mortality rate. The aim of the study was to identify contributing factors that determine mortality and need for chemotherapy in this patient group. Methods Six-year, single-centre, retrospective study of neonatal TAM cases requiring admission to intensive care. Data were collected from electronic patient records, laboratory and genetic results.
Safety and Effectiveness of Dexmeditomidine for sedation in neonates
Is [Dexmeditomidine] safe and more effective than standard sedatives for [sedation] in [neonates] on mechanical ventilator?A two day old term neonate with meconium aspiration syndrome is on mechanical ventilation in a level III neonatal unit. He is diagnosed to have PPHN with a possibility to remain on the ventilator at least for another 24 hours. We know that dexmedetomidine is used in the paediatric intensive care units for sedation. But, can it be used in neonates?
