Abstract Water Kefir is a plant-based fermented beverage, traditionally produced on a small scale by fermenting a sucrose solution with fresh or dried fruits, using water kefir grains as inoculum. The grains are relatively simple communities that consist of both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, rendering them a paradigm for studying microbial ecology and interspecies interactions.

Its fascinating origins, rich biodiversity, and magnetic charm are celebrated in three-part documentary series Ireland’s Coast which starts on RTÉ1 tonight (Sunday) at 6.30pm. The series will bring audiences on a fascinating journey through time along Ireland’s coastline, narrated by the Oscar-nominated actor Ciarán Hinds.

Chef Neven Maguire heads to coastal towns - including Cork - in new TV series

As prolific as he is inspiring, chef Neven Maguire is back on our screens in a new series, Neven’s Coastal Food Trails on RTÉ1 on Wednesday, September 11, at 8pm. In this six-part run, he heads to some of Ireland’s coastal towns - including some in Cork - visiting restaurants, cafes and street food stalls, and meeting artisan food producers. The Cavan man also includes Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Sligo, Donegal and Clare in his grand tour.
