US food safety officials opted against the most burdensome option for foodmakers in Monday’s proposal seeking to end the industry’s ability to self-determine the safety of their ingredients without alerting regulators. Food companies would be able to continue sending products to market that contain new food additives deemed “generally recognized as safe,” or GRAS, under a Food and Drug Administration draft rule that stops short of establishing a pre-market approval process for new ingredients.
