Another Running Boom Is Here—and U.S. Major Marathons Are Expanding to Meet Demand

The number of finishers at the Boston Marathon used to be consistent, plus or minus a couple of hundred runners. For the five Bostons between 2015 and 2019, the finishers ranged from 25,907 to 26,762 each year, according to the Boston Athletic Association, which puts on the event. But as demand for marathons—especially the World Marathon Majors—grew after the pandemic, the field size has spiked in the two most recent editions of the race: There were 28,409 finishers in 2025 and 29,033 in 2026.

NYRR Unveils Plan to Attempt to Ease Race Registration Woes

New York Road Runners has announced a pilot program to attempt to serve runners at New York City events who aren’t trying to race the New York City Marathon. Three races and two training runs in August and September will have bibs set aside for runners who are not trying to participate in the organization’s popular 9+1 program. That program gives runners who have done nine NYRR weekly races and have volunteered once guaranteed marathon entry for the following year.
