March 12, 2026, 5:12 a.m. ET A proposed Ohio bill would ban middle and high school athletes from earning money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Sean Patrick Brennan argues this is unfair, as other students can earn money from their talents in areas like music, coding, or tutoring. Extremely stripped supernova reveals a silicon and sulfur formation site

Abstract Stars are initially powered by the fusion of hydrogen to helium. These ashes serve as fuel in a series of stages1,2,3, transforming massive stars into a structure of shells. These are composed of natal hydrogen on the outside and consecutively heavier compositions inside, predicted to be dominated by He, C/O, O/Ne/Mg and O/Si/S (refs. 4,5). Silicon and sulfur are fused into iron, leading to the collapse of the core and either a supernova explosion or the formation of a black hole6,7,8,9.

Player-Coach: Benji Eckerle’s Impact on ASU Hockey
(Photo: Sammi Maxwell/WCSN) On Jan. 30 prior to Arizona State’s series opener against Miami, Redhawks head coach Anthony Noreen went to the Sun Devils’ encampment in Goggin Ice Center to meet up with head coach Greg Powers. It just so happened that he ran into an old friend riding a stationary bike on the way there.
Sun Devils clinch second-straight series with complete win over BYU
(Photo: Nickolas Montei/WCSN) PHOENIX — There was little panic within Arizona State’s dugout when BYU sophomore outfielder Crew McChesney sent the third pitch of Friday’s game over the right-field wall, instantly putting the Cougars ahead. Although a moment like that can set an ominous tone, the Sun Devils know that with their high-powered offense, they can erase most negatives with a few swings of that bat. That held true on Friday night. Several times.
Sun Devils' Complete Effort Powers Much-Needed Win Over Texas Tech
(Photo: Maya Diaz/WCSN) PHOENIX — Adversity can be handled in one of two ways in life. You could either fold under the pressure and elect not to push any further or choose to keep fighting against all odds. Arizona State baseball dealt with its fair share of adversity this past week, losing three of four games on its Midwest road trip and being walked off twice.

'He gave us a chance to win': Jack Martinez puts up strong start in loss to Arizona
PHOENIX — In the moments leading up to the start of the seventh inning, Arizona State senior right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez stepped onto the mound inside Phoenix Municipal Stadium looking to put his last frame of work behind him. He’d just given up three runs on three hits that ballooned Arizona’s lead from 2-0 to 5-0, and with an ASU offense that seemed lifeless for most of the night, a five-run deficit appeared a tall mountain to climb.
No. 24 Sun Devils struggle to find offense in 5-3 loss to Arizona
(Photo: Nickolas Montei/WCSN) PHOENIX – After Arizona State dropped the first game of its weekend series against Arizona, the Sun Devils would have wanted a clean start to game two. Senior right-handed starter Jack Martinez started strong against the senior second baseman Garen Caulfield, the Wildcats’ leadoff batter, getting ahead 0-2, but the good start didn’t last.

(Photo: Joshua Eaton/WCSN) ST. PAUL, Minn. — The final horn sounded at Xcel Energy Center, concluding Arizona State’s head-turning first season in the NCHC. After the handshake line, the ice cleared out and remained barren with the exception of graduate forward Artem Shlaine, who was taking a knee on the ice with his head locked into place and eyes fixated on the ice below him. Junior forward Tucker Ness hung out at ASU’s bench and allowed Shlaine to sit in his thoughts.
No. 11 Sun Devils' Season Ends With 4-2 Loss To No. 6 Denver in NCHC Semifinals
(Photo: Joshua Eaton/WCSN) ST. PAUL, Minn. — Graduate forward Artem Shlaine’s game-tying goal in the second period of Arizona State hockey’s NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinal game was a perfect embodiment of his team’s mindset throughout the 2024-25 campaign. Likely playing with a fractured foot after blocking a shot in the first per head coach Greg Powers, his relentless forecheck forced Denver sophomore defenseman Garrett Brown into a turnover deep in the Pioneers’ defensive zone.
Sun Devils lack intensity in 6-3 loss to rival USC
(Photo: Joshua Eaton/WCSN) PHOENIX — Like any player or coach, there are a few opponents that Arizona State baseball head coach Willie Bloomquist has extra motivation to face. Naturally, as an alum of the school who spent three years in Tempe from 1997-99, Arizona tops that list being the Sun Devils’ most hated rival. But there’s another team that Bloomquist ‘hates’: USC.
BIG EAST MBB Gets Five NCAA Bids

Questions Get Answered This Week At MSG
By Sean Brennan, BIG EAST Special So just how important an event is the BIG EAST Tournament to the 11 schools that will descend on Madison Square Garden this week in hopes of being crowned the 2025 champion? That’s clearly the main question to be answered over the next four days. But there are always a bevy of questions at this time of year when those 11 teams vie for BIG EAST basketball supremacy.
Sun Devils aim to build off midweek win against Gonzaga this weekend
(Photo: Austin Hurst/WCSN) Arizona State baseball desperately needed a performance like the one it put forward on Tuesday night. After a weekend against Minnesota that saw them blow two late-game leads en route to their first series loss of the season, the Sun Devils seemingly unleashed those frustrations on UNLV, winning 7-0 for their second straight midweek shutout.
Starter Jack Martinez shines in Sun Devils' loss to Minnesota
(Photo: Austin Hurst/WCSN) PHOENIX — Jack Martinez entered the 2025 campaign with lofty expectations placed on him before he even threw a single pitch at the Power Four level. An incoming transfer after spending a season at Louisiana Lafayette, the senior right-hander impressed during the offseason and earned a spot as Arizona State’s Saturday starter. The only concern?
No. 12 Sun Devils Travel To Omaha As Postseason Implications Loom
(Photo: Marina Williams/WCSN) When Arizona State men’s hockey hosted Omaha at Mullett Arena in mid-November, both teams were victims of sluggish starts to their 2024 campaigns. The shorthanded Sun Devils limped into the two-game set with a pedestrian 3-6-1 record, and the Mavericks weren’t in much better shape. After winning the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament by downing two top-15 teams — Massachusetts and Minnesota — Omaha dropped its next six games to enter the weekend at 2-6-0.

Sun Devils rebound with 12-5 win over Oral Roberts
(Photo: Zina Garcia/WCSN) PHOENIX — In baseball, it’s uber-important to have a short memory. With so many games on the schedule — around 60 for most NCAA squads — a team cannot become fixated on one isolated result or outcome, even if it adds another tally into the loss column. On Friday, Arizona State held a two-run lead over Oral Roberts with right-hander Will Koger, one of its highly-touted relievers, taking the mound for the ninth inning.
Relentlessness Powers No. 12 Sun Devils to win over No. 3 Western Michigan
TEMPE — It only takes a quick glance at the stats to see how dominant No. 3 Western Michigan hockey has been this season. Entering this weekend at 22-5-1, the Broncos score at a high volume while also possessing the size and savvy to effectively keep pucks out of their own end. If they do allow shots, they have two top-10 goaltenders capable of making the big save when necessary. Whether they’re at even strength or on special teams, the only word to describe WMU is dominant.

(Photo: Jordan Talley/WCSN) TEMPE — Graduate student forward Ty Jackson brought the crowd of 5,300+ to its feet after he capitalized on a mistake by the Broncos, giving the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead and that was just the precursor to the bloodbath that would take place in Tempe. Mullett Arena felt like a playoff atmosphere in Tempe, as a sold-out crowd willed No. 12 Arizona State Hockey (22-6-1, 15-3-1 NCHC) to a 5-3 win over No. 3 Western Michigan (18-11-2, 13-7-1 NCHC).
Matt Shott keeps legacy alive through foundation
In Arizona and across the country, many ice rinks are private and free to operate without answering to anyone when making decisions. That can lead to friction between two rinks whose owners do not see eye-to-eye on any issue, and those in Arizona are no exception. But when honoring the late Matt Shott by hanging his jersey, each one in the state agreed without question to the tribute.

Sun Devils' young relievers struggle in win over Ohio State
(Photo: Bryan Ross/WCSN) PHOENIX — In the first three seasons of head coach Willie Bloomquist’s tenure at Arizona State, there has been a consistent formula to winning games. The Sun Devils were never going to beat you 2-1; they were going to out-slug you, put up crooked innings and never stop hitting the baseball. Even if they weren’t pitching well, which occurred often, their lineup usually played well enough to put them in a position to win regardless.
