1. Introduction Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”, is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventually paralysis [1]. Despite being the most common form of adult-onset motor neuron degeneration, ALS is considered a rare disease, with an incidence of approximately 4 per 100,000 people in the United States [2,3].
