Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but we’ve had a surprisingly robust presence on the big screen. Providence streets have doubled for fictional cities. Newport mansions have stood in for Long Island estates. A former Friendly’s became a very famous burger joint. And some of Hollywood’s biggest stars — from Robert Redford and Brad Pitt to Steve Carell and Bette Midler — have filmed scenes across the Ocean State. The walls at Chan’s Fine Oriental Dining are crowded with signed photographs of jazz legends and decades of memories from a Chinese restaurant that became one of New England’s most enduring music clubs. For nearly 50 years, musicians and music lovers have traveled to downtown Woonsocket for a combination they are unlikely to find anywhere else: Chinese food, jazz and blues — all served under one roof.

The highly anticipated Christopher Nolan adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” hits theaters this weekend, but Odysseus isn’t the only one to embark on an epic journey this summer. My colleague Allison Magnus and I recently went on a quest of our own. No, we weren’t returning home, per se. We were on the hunt for something more fantastical — something I reckon Odysseus himself may have enjoyed learning about. Cumberlandite! Rhode Island’s state rock is extremely rare and extremely cool.
