MORGAN BURDICK WAS 19 when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a fast-growing blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. Her doctors at Emory Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta recommended that she receive a stem cell transplant, where she would receive stem cells from another person. The hope was that these donor cells would take up residence in Burdick’s bone marrow, introducing a new immune system equipped to battle any remaining leukemia cells.
