Sophia Michelen

Sophia Michelen is an award-winning travel journalist, photographer, documentary producer, and PBS travel show host covering travel, culture, science-forward experiences, and the human dimensions of place.

She is a host and associate producer on the PBS series America: The Land We Live In, where she reports on destinations through the lives of the people who shape them—artisans, conservationists, scientists, and community leaders—examining how history, environment, and cultural memory influence contemporary travel experiences.

Sophia’s travel reporting blends traditional destination journalism with science and neuroscience-informed storytelling, exploring how landscapes, architecture, climate, and ritual affect perception, behavior, and emotional connection. Her work often investigates why certain places change us—how travel shapes memory, identity, and well-being—while remaining grounded in rigorous reporting and on-the-ground access.
