Where to celebrate America’s 250th in Indianapolis

July Fourth is around the corner, and celebrations for this year are going to be even bigger than usual. It’s America’s semiquincentennial, a very long word that means the United States is celebrating its 250th birthday. Indianapolis has been part of that history since it became a city and Indiana’s state capital in 1821. When America turned 100, in 1876, Hoosiers celebrated with a 160-gun salute at dawn, as the country was still recovering from the Civil War.

Celebrate Juneteenth and be part of a short film

You know how the day after a great party, people will say, “Last night was a movie?” This year on Juneteenth, Brother Jamaal Shabazz and Kwesi Rogers will host a Juneteenth Juke Joint event and turn it into a short film. It will be at Rogers’ recently opened event space in Fountain Square called Untitled, 1028 Shelby St. If you show up at 8 p.m., you can share your answer to the question, “What does Blackness mean to you?” on camera.

Play basketball to raise scholarship money for Indy students

Lace up your sneakers and recruit a three-person basketball team to raise scholarship money for Indianapolis students this summer. The 3-on-3 BFA Enterprises’ Ball for All tournament runs from noon to 4 p.m. July 25 at Keenan-Stahl Boys & Girls Club, 1949 E. Troy Ave. It costs $50 per team to sign up. All the money raised will be donated as a scholarship to the Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis. The tournament is open for registration.
