Disaster in Java: Why Are Shallow Earthquakes More Destructive?
Badri, 62, stands near badly damaged houses after the earthquake in Cianjur, West Java province, November 25, 2022. Photo: Reuters/Ajeng Dinar Ulfiana At magnitude 5.6, the Cianjur earthquake was much smaller than many other earthquakes in Indonesia have been. It was so devastating because of its shallow depth of 10 km. Large earthquakes more than 50 km deep cause widespread damage, but the intensity of shaking is reduced because the seismic waves travel at least 50 km before they reach people.
The devastation in Java shows how dangerous shallow earthquakes can be
On November 21, an earthquake near the Indonesian city of Cianjur in West Java caused at least 268 deaths and damaged 22,000 buildings. At magnitude 5.6, this earthquake was much smaller than many other earthquakes that have caused death and destruction in Indonesia over the past few decades. Why is this one so different? One of the main reasons the Cianjur earthquake was so destructive was its shallow depth of 10 km.
Why Are Shallow Earthquakes More Destructive? Java Is a Devastating Example
Cianjur, the site of this week’s earthquake, has experienced at least one damaging earthquake, on March 28 1879, which caused the collapse of several buildings in Cianjur with some loss of life. A Fact of Life Geologists understand well that earthquakes are a fact of life in Java. In work over the past two decades they have identified many faults – cracks or joints in Earth’s crust – in Java that are likely to be active, but only a handful of these have been studied in detail.

The 8 April 1860 Jour de Pâques Earthquake Sequence in Southern Haiti
The grave threat posed by the Enriquillo‐Plantain Garden fault zone (EPGFZ) and other fault systems on the Tiburon Peninsula in southern Haiti was highlighted by the catastrophic M 7.0 Léogâne earthquake on 12 January 2010 and again by the deadly M 7.2 Nippes earthquakes on 14 August 2021.
Shriners Hospital Drive

The rank of Eagle Scout is recognized as a superior achievement. Only a few percent of all Scouts have the persistence and determination to get there. For Luke, the journey to Eagle started when he was 7 years old.
Drive for Teen Patients at Shriners Hospital
This post was contributed by a community member. Castro Valley High School senior, Luke Martin is working on the final steps toward earning the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank, the Eagle Scout. The final requirement for earning the Eagle is a service project that benefits the community. The scout designs, plans, fundraises, purchases materials and then carries out and gives leadership throughout the project. Deciding who he wanted to benefit from his service project was an easy choice for Luke.

A comparison of observed and predicted ground motions from the 2015 M
We use 21 strong motion recordings from Nepal and India for the 25 April 2015 moment magnitude (M ) 7.8 Gorkha, Nepal, earthquake together with the extensive macroseismic intensity data set presented by Martin et al. (Seism Res Lett 87:957–962, 2015) to analyse the distribution of ground motions at near-field and regional distances. We show that the data are consistent with the instrumental peak ground acceleration (PGA) versus macroseismic intensity relationship developed by Worden et al.
