(WFLA) — As the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission’s work came to an end this week, law enforcement officers and first responders were at work in Lakeland, training for an active shooter situation they hope never comes. “There’s always ways that we can be better, that we can be faster, that we can prevent these things from happening,” said Lakeland Police Sgt. Nicholas Rex, who is also president of the Florida SWAT Association.

Lakeland family donates ICU bags after losing daughter in car crash

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A Polk County family honored a young woman’s life by giving back on her birthday. Victoria “Tori” Smith would have turned 23 years old on Saturday, June 20. It was her first birthday since her death after a car crash in July 2025. In honor of her birthday, her family visited Lakeland Regional Health and donated 23 overnight bags to the trauma ICU, where Smith was treated. They can be used by other families facing similar hardships.
