Who Gets to Hear the Philadelphia Orchestra?
The Philadelphia Orchestra has spent more than a century establishing itself as one of America’s leading orchestras. But I wonder how many Philadelphians have actually heard them perform. On October 8, the orchestra presented another Orchestra After 5 concert, featuring violinist Gil Shaham and conductor Dalia Stasevska. The concert series offers shorter performances, earlier starting times and a more relaxed atmosphere. I like the idea.
UK–EU relations are being reset. British musicians touring Europe must be part of the deal
The UK government has returned to an issue musicians have been discussing since Brexit: how to make working in Europe easier again. Its new music strategy, Turn It Up: Our Plan for Music, refers to the first high-level meeting on culture between the UK and the European Commission, held back in March, and promises continued work to reduce the barriers faced by British artists touring the EU. The timing is significant.
Opera North’s Eugene Onegin: Opened at Leeds Grand Theatre on 9 October
There are certain things you expect from a production of Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky’s opera, such as beautiful music, tangled love affairs and, perhaps, a few 19th century ballgowns. What you’re unlikely to expect, however, are the striking features of red banners bearing Lenin’s portrait, the emblem of the CSKA, Moscow’s football club and a set reminiscent of a Soviet sports hall.

Axed piping broadcast points to 'bigger issue'
The reported decision by the BBC to axe its broadcasting of the World Pipe Band Championships is a retrograde step that is putting up barriers which broadcasting spent much of the 20th Century breaking down. That is the view of one music historian who contacted welovestornoway to echo concerns about the impact the decision would have on disabled fans and other fans and families of players tuning into performances from home.
So what happened to the culture card? And how would it work if it ever shows up?
FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, the culture card proposed in Ireland looked like one of the most appealing announcements in Budget 2027. The idea was simple: give young people €100 for cultural purposes and let them decide how to spend it. But when the budget was presented, the culture card was nowhere to be seen. Jack Chambers, Minister for Public Expenditure, subsequently confirmed that the scheme had not received funding and could not be implemented next year in its proposed form.
When does rediscovery become repertoire?
This week, 100 works by 100 women composers will be performed in Perth, Western Australia. Hear Her Now, organised by the Mirabilis Collective, spans centuries of musical history, from early repertoire to new Australian commissions. Its scale makes the increasingly familiar description of music created by women sound rather odd: ‘rediscovered’. Classical music has become a master of rediscovery.

Analysis: Can an orchestra die? San Antonio will find out.
Former San Antonio Philharmonic musical director Jeffrey Kahane heads the Harmonium of Texas. When Harmonium of Texas gives its first orchestral concert Friday evening, its musicians will perform a piece preoccupied with the turning of fortune’s wheel. Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana may prove an exceptionally fitting choice for classical music in San Antonio. Four years ago, the city appeared to have lost its professional orchestra.

The Gentlemen’s Concerts: Manchester’s 19th century blueprint for music
Manchester loves to tell its cultural story through the people who created things with their own hands. Factory Records, the Haçienda, and the city’s countless independent venues have helped to create a mythology in which culture is born not only within established institutions, but also thanks to people who decide that Manchester is missing something — and then bring that idea to life.
What Happens to Presidential Power When the Cameras Disappear?
For most of US history, presidents have faced a central public image problem: They could not fully control how Americans perceived them. Newspapers chose which of their statements to publish. Photographers chose the angles. Television cameras could just as easily linger on an awkward pause as focus on a polished speech. Even presidents who mastered new media had to share control over the shaping of their public image with people outside the White House.

The crisis at S.F. Opera reveals the hidden economics of high culture
The San Francisco Opera began its 104th season with an empty orchestra pit. The musicians went on strike shortly before the Saturday premiere of Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra,” leading to the cancellation of the season opener. Since then, the company had suspended the season, canceling performances through Sunday as the musicians and management tried to reach an agreement on wages, guaranteed working hours and the institution’s financial future.

The Piano: how the viral appeal of pianists in public spaces is not so different from 19th-century music salons
Why have public displays of piano playing become so compelling? At railway stations, shopping centres and airports, an instrument usually associated with concert halls bursts into everyday life. In the space of a few moments, shoppers and passengers become an audience – and once a recording of the performance is posted online, this encounter can reach thousands or even millions of people.

House of the Dragon: four real historic women who inspired the show
Dragons may be fictional, but the struggle for the throne, influence and legitimacy in House of the Dragons has roots in conflicts that shaped real history. Long before the fictional Westeros, women across Europe and Asia faced rival claimants, political factions and systems designed to keep them from power.
