Climate–soil interactions drive environmental filtering of herbaceous mountain plant communities in Griqualand West, South Africa
Abstract Environmental filters shape herbaceous plant community composition and structure. Climate is the primary driver, followed by geological heterogeneity influencing plant–soil relationships. The mountains of Griqualand West (GW), a centre of plant endemism in South Africa, host diverse herbaceous communities, yet vegetation–environment relationships remain poorly understood.

Climate change threatens crop diversity at low latitudes - Nature Food
Abstract Climate change alters the climatic suitability of croplands, likely shifting the spatial distribution and diversity of global food crop production. Analyses of future potential food crop diversity have been limited to a small number of crops. Here we project geographical shifts in the climatic niches of 30 major food crops under 1.5–4 °C global warming and assess their impact on current crop production and potential food crop diversity across global croplands.
A global open-source dataset of monthly irrigated and rainfed cropped areas (MIRCA-OS) for the 21st century - Scientific Data
Abstract Crop production is among the most extensive human activities on the planet – with critical importance for global food security, land use, environmental burden, and climate. Yet despite the key role that croplands play in global land use and Earth systems, there remains little understanding of how spatial patterns of global crop cultivation have recently evolved and which crops have contributed most to these changes.

The asymmetric impacts of international agricultural trade on water use scarcity, inequality and inequity - Nature Water
Abstract Freshwater is closely interconnected with multiple sustainable development goals (SDGs). Virtual water transfer associated with agricultural trade may help to mitigate water scarcity (SDG6). However, the resulting impacts on water scarcity distribution among income groups (SDG1) and subsequent effects on water use inequality and inequity (SDG10) remain largely unclear.
Half of twenty-first century global irrigation expansion has been in water-stressed regions - Nature Water
Abstract The expansion of irrigated agriculture has increased global crop production but resulted in widespread stress on freshwater resources. Ensuring that increases in irrigated production occur only in places where water is relatively abundant is a key objective of sustainable agriculture and knowledge of how irrigated land has evolved is important for measuring progress towards water sustainability.
Assessing and addressing the global state of food production data scarcity - Nature Reviews Earth & Environment Original
Abstract Food production data — such as crop, livestock, aquaculture and fisheries statistics — are critical to achieving multiple sustainable development goals. However, the lack of reliable, regularly collected, accessible, usable and spatially disaggregated statistics limits an accurate picture of the state of food production in many countries and prevents the implementation of effective food system interventions.

Global spatially explicit yield gap time trends reveal regions at risk of future crop yield stagnation - Nature Food
Abstract Yield gaps, here defined as the difference between actual and attainable yields, provide a framework for assessing opportunities to increase agricultural productivity. Previous global assessments, centred on a single year, were unable to identify temporal variation. Here we provide a spatially and temporally comprehensive analysis of yield gaps for ten major crops from 1975 to 2010.
Difficult-to-treat psoriatic arthritis: moving out of the rheumatoid arthritis shadow - Nature Reviews Rheumatology
As in rheumatoid arthritis, achieving low disease activity or remission in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) remains a challenge and unmet need for many individuals. However, the complex pathogenesis, heterogeneity and varied tissue involvement in PsA mean that dedicated definitions and novel solutions are required for difficult-to-treat disease.

Food system by-products upcycled in livestock and aquaculture feeds can increase global food supply - Nature Food
Abstract Many livestock and aquaculture feeds compete for resources with food production. Increasing the use of food system by-products and residues as feed could reduce this competition. We gathered data on global food system material flows for crop, livestock and aquaculture production, focusing on feed use and the availability of by-products and residues.
The role of IL‐23 and the use IL‐23 inhibitors in psoriatic arthritis
2 THE IL-23/IL-17 AXIS IN PSORIATIC DISEASE The central pathogenic role of the IL-23/IL-17 pathway, and efficacy of therapies targeting this pathway, in psoriatic disease was first demonstrated in the skin in psoriasis (Liu et al., 2020). This was subsequently also confirmed in PsA, with compelling evidence ranging from genome-wide association studies (Vecellio et al., 2020), circulating and tissue cytokine studies and, most importantly, efficacy in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Quantifying Earth system interactions for sustainable food production via expert elicitation - Nature Sustainability
|
The following section describes the main steps in our methodology as illustrated in Fig. 1. We first explain the control variables we used for each of the Earth system processes of interest (Fig. 2a) and the hypothetical study area (Fig. 2b) and introduce the structured elicitation protocol. We further describe the methods used to aggregate and normalize the elicitation results to quantify the interaction strengths.

Impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on recruitment to clinical research studies in rheumatology
1 INTRODUCTION Recruitment to clinical studies is often challenging, and there has been increasing focus on developing strategies to promote participant recruitment (Treweek et al., 2018). During the current pandemic, the recruitment of participants to non-COVID-19-related clinical studies has been negatively impacted by issues including prioritisation of COVID-19 research, redeployment of research staff and the need for social distancing (Mitchell et al., 2020).
