Dozens of people line up under a baking sun in 90-degree heat, just for a chance at a bed at Wichita’s primary low-barrier homeless shelter, Second Light. People gather every day to vie for one of the 24 open beds. At 4 p.m., security guards usher people, mostly men, in one by one. Once the 24th lucky individual makes it past the doors, everyone else will, likely, have to find a spot outside to sleep.

Chances are you haven’t forgotten, but the issues it platformed may not feel as pertinent to address. To us, they’ve become even more deserving of attention, since those pitched funds won’t come to fruition. Funds necessary to meet community needs.

Picture a day in the life of a firefighter, and you may think of a crew hustling down the street, siren blaring. At the scene of a call, the work can be dangerous, physically demanding and dirty. But in some places, the hazards don’t end there. Back at the station, where equipment is maintained, meals are prepared and personnel catch what sleep they can, too often the workplace isn’t safe or clean.
