Now that Dry January has ended, it’s a good time to re-introduce the recent surgeon general advisory on the risk of alcohol use and cancer. Using ‘Dry January’ as a time to reset or ‘detox’ the body from alcohol can be a good start to exploring life without consuming alcohol. However, the month after Dry January can, paradoxically, become a time of even more intense alcohol consumption as a form of reward for taking the previous month off.

Introduction Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the paralysis of limb and respiratory muscles due to the loss of upper and lower motor neurons. Without ventilator support, patients usually die within 2–4 years of symptom onset (1). Weight loss is observed in approximately 70% of ALS patients, mainly because of loss of oral intake and metabolic alterations (2).
