It’s been two decades — yes, two decades — since lawmakers in Washington, D.C., passed the REAL ID Act to establish minimum security standards for state-issued IDs. Despite years and years of delays, authorities are saying the latest deadline for people to get the enhanced ID cards (May 7) is actually the deadline. They promise. Sans a Trump or Musk whim between now and May, you’ll need a Real ID (or, notably, a passport) to board a plane or enter certain federal facilities, like military bases.
