ECU's Gavin Van Kempen selected in 12th round of 2026 MLB Draft by Dodgers

East Carolina right-handed pitcher Gavin Van Kempen has been selected 373rd overall in the 12th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers of the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft. He becomes the second Pirate player to be taken in the draft, following left-hander Ethan Norby, who went in the fourth round to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Van Kempen spent just one season at ECU, and it was a short-lived one, as he suffered an arm injury that required season-ending surgery early in the season.

We're inside of 100 days until East Carolina kicks off its 2026 season in Tuscaloosa at Alabama. It'll be a 12 noon ET kickoff on Sept. 5 inside Bryant-Denny Stadium between the Pirates and Crimson Tide. But there's plenty of time between now and then. So much time, in fact, we're going to spend the rest of the offseason counting down the days to kickoff.

ECU’s Ethan Norby selected in fourth round of 2026 MLB Draft

East Carolina left-handed pitcher Ethan Norby has been selected 122nd overall in the fourth round of the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Norby, listed at 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, is expected to sign and conclude his stellar ECU career. He follows in the footsteps of his older brother Connor Norby, who starred at ECU from 2019-21, before being selected by the Baltimore Orioles. Connor is now with the Marlins' organization.
