Digital Sovereignty is the New Sovereignty: Canada Can Lead the Middle-Power Vanguard
Shutterstock By Richard St-Pierre and Stephen Karam January 28, 2026 In his landmark Davos speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney invoked Václav Havel’s famous “sign in the window” parable to describe the comfortable fictions of the old international order. The sovereignty debate currently consuming the world is mostly framed in this old paradigm.

Supreme Court Bombshell: Anybody Can Rain on Fanny Brice’s Parade
Providing a definitive answer to Ms. Brice’s provocative question “Who told you you’re allowed to rain on my parade?,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in his majority opinion, “While the Court sympathizes with Fanny’s First Amendment right to have a parade, her insistence that ‘nobody, no, nobody’ can rain on it is both melodramatic and not founded on substantive case law.

The Humans by Brian Morton
There is a certain style of naturalistic playwrighting that has become dominant in the United States over the past twenty five years. It's a modern update on 19th century naturalism, with hyper realistic settings and the Aristotelian compression of time into a few hours. Real water comes out of the taps, and food is cooked and consumed onstage while we watch.

5 Contemporary Classic Plays That Will Stand the Test of Time
What defines a classic? We tend to look into the distant past in search of plays that critics, audiences, and scholars of long ago decided met their criteria for excellence, and we’ve been reviving those plays over and over again ever since. But every classic play was once brand new, and the canon is (and should be) continually expanding. Here are some works written no more than 15 years ago that I believe are destined to be classics of the future.

By Stephen Karam Recipient of The Tony Award for Best Play Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, eerie things start to go bump in the night and the heart and horrors of the Blake clan are exposed.
The Humans
By turns hilarious and haunting, the Tony-winning play The Humans tells the story of the Blakes, a middle-class American family celebrating a most unusual Thanksgiving. This year, they gather in New York City at youngest daughter Brigid’s Chinatown apartment - a basement duplex that would feel like a bargain if not for the lack of sunlight and the sudden, unexplained, loud noises coming from upstairs.

Family turmoil powerfully captured in ‘The Humans’ in San Jose
There’s something severely amiss in the humble Thanksgiving dinner taking place in the as yet unfurnished apartment of new couple Brigid and Richard. Brigid’s Irish Catholic family is coming over, and her parents keep making pointed passive-aggressive comments about why she and Richard aren’t married or even engaged.

Overview Hopeful, heartbreaking, and at times “blisteringly funny” (The New York Times), The Humans takes place on Thanksgiving as three generations of the Blake family gather at the youngest daughter and her boyfriend’s new apartment in Lower Manhattan’s Chinatown. As darkness falls outside and around the pre-war duplex, tensions rise and secrets are divulged.

Stage: ‘The Humans’ arrives in SF with a bunch of awards and John-Boy too
“The Humans” comes to San Francisco with an almost exhausting list of bona fides. Now playing at the SHN Orpheum Theatre for a two-weekend special engagement, Stephen Karam’s play won Tony, Obie and Drama Desk Awards for best or outstanding play and was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist. Just last week it was on the New York Times’ list of the 25 best American plays since “Angels in America.” That’s a whole lot to live up to.

THE HUMANS | Let's Play
“The Humans” is one of those rare and fascinating plays that you get a chance to witness how the diversity of our cultures will alter the viewpoint of how we interpret the struggles of life. How we can see each situation and determine how it should translate the same for all but when we recently saw the play it dramatically reminded us again how vastly different we see things culturally.
Guides for Survival in the Trump Simulacrum
The pink, white-veined marble lobby of Trump Tower was my sanctuary. For six years, its gilded atrium served as an escape from my corporate day job and reality in general. On hot summer days, I liked being a poor playwright in a pretend palace, an over-air conditioned Versailles. I’d make personal calls, eat Trump pizza and dream of future plays—the space’s superficiality was strangely useful for self-reflection.
Speech and Debate | Plays To See
Stephen Karam’s newly devised play follows the lives of three kids in Oregon. These kids, who attend the same school, come together through a social suicide pact called “Speech & Debate”: an extra-curricular class with public speaking and acting. Within the four walls of the classroom, the kids achieve semi-therapeutic release from the problems of their unpopular lives, as they take tentative steps towards self-expression. Speech & Debate is a fun collision of awkward adolescence.

‘Oddly Normal’ by John Schwartz
Joseph Schwartz has sophisticated, loving parents. When they noticed their son’s aversion to sports and attraction to dolls, they didn’t assume Joseph was gay; they just knew he was different. When Joseph referred to Saladin, the well-dressed 12th-century Sultan of Egypt and Syria, as “the fabulous Muslim leader,” they simply embraced their son’s panache.

Review: ‘The Humans,’ a Family Thanksgiving for a Fearful Middle Class
Dinner is hosted by the youngest Blake sibling, Brigid (Sarah Steele), and her boyfriend, Rich (Arian Moayed), at their new apartment in Chinatown. It’s a duplex, but one made from combining a dark basement apartment with the almost equally dark unit upstairs. In David Zinn’s terrifically detailed two-tiered set, a spiral staircase connects the floors, and the action moves between them almost constantly.
Light a Candle for PJ Paparelli-and Use It to Continue His Work
If the late director was tireless, it wasn’t for his own sake. He demanded as much from himself as he did from others, and we are all the richer for it. Last week PJ Paparelli, artistic director of Chicago’s American Theater Company, died in a car accident while on vacation in Scotland. He was just 40 years old. We asked playwright Stephen Karam, a frequent collaborator of Paparelli’s, to write this tribute.
